…lie rotting in boxes
six feet beneath
hard-packed earth and
a mocking layer of
grass.
Heavy stones press on
their heads from above,
bearing their names
because
decay and dirt render
them
unrecognizable.
Flowers wilt and die
in their honor
as the living whisper
hollow words to ears
that death deafened
long ago.
