Remember that hair you always pulled,

That lunch money you stole every day,

Those names you called that stuck for years?

Remember that face you repeatedly punched,

That family you spread rumours about,

That voice and walk you imitated and mocked?

Remember those feelings you ripped to shreds,

That body you bruised,

That life that, for days, years, you made wish it was over?

That was me.

My hair, my face, my life.

Remember now?

Remember that day when you were working the long shift at the drive-in,

That person who walked in, married, rich, happy,

That person who shoved your life into the shadows?

Remember that face,

That body, that life, probably still scarred?

I bet you don’t.

I do.

I remember you, your laughs, your names,

I remember your fists, your taunts.

Looking back

I’m glad I do.
