Battle of the Sun and Cloud

The clouds began to form into dark, sinister shapes, black with malevolence. The swelled higher and higher, bloated with evilness, and with all intentions of blocking out the sun. Yet the sun would not give up without a fight. A single ray of light shone through his oppressor, as if to say, “You haven’t beaten me yet.”

The whole scenario was similar to the classic bully story. The big, mean, bully picks on the short, nerdy kid, and that little kid jumped and jumped as hard and as high as he could, but could never quite reach his lunch money that dangled above his head, just out of his grasp.

Then deep rumbles came, along with flashes of blue and purple from within the belly of the mighty bully. He was getting angry and frustrated that the little guy was not giving up as easily as all his other prey. The stars were small and shy—easy prey for one such as him, and the sky easily turned a shade of dark grey in submission to the cloud’s will. Yet there was the sun, still shining through the cracks in the cloud’s wall. The rumblings grew louder, resonating through the sky, making her quiver in fear, and the stars ran to hide. Each crack of light grew more and more violent and wild. Suddenly, the mighty bully released a great burst of frustration, ripping the poor sky in two if only for a moment. Even after the flash of violent purple was long gone, his rage still clung to the air giving warning to everyone of his wrath.

Yet the brave little sun refused to be intimidated. He had been bullied by this particular cloud once too many and would take no more. The sun had finally found weak points in his oppressor and shown his own rays of amber light, exposing bully and all of his flaws. The bully let loose sheets of rain, each drop bloated and hot with anger. Every single drop hit the ground hard, as if blaming the land for the sun’s actions. The wind picked up, tossed around in anger by the mighty cloud until it howled out her pain in terrible banshee-like shrieks.

A great burst of brilliant gold burst straight through the heart of the cloud. It roared and bellowed in pain and surprise before breaking up into a million pieces and turning a benign white color in attempts to hide amongst the sky. The wind settled and the rain stopped. The sky turned back to her azure color, given courage by the sun to point out the cowardly bully who hid amongst her.

The courageous little sun shone brightly, showing the world all he had done. All the while I sat there, far below, in a field of clovers, cheering him on.
