Charm’s Weeds

Flour Bluff, Texas
11 October 2009

I planted lavender,
but got clover in its stead:
I don’t know what I did
to fool my garden so.

The rows were neat;
the holes precise
in their depth & size;
the Texas sun bright;
I watered till the rains came.

& still, unintended
and uninvited,
that at first I plucked
for their brazen
irrepressibility,—
3 and 4 leafed green clovers
sprouted everywhere;
with an occasional
purple flower to remind
me of my intent.

But such is life that now,
a month later,
I’ve stopped looking in that forest
for my seeded fragrance
& just smile at luck’s charm.
