Lily sits there on the park bench that’s practically hers now, she’s sat on it so many times, and looks at the scenery the cool autumn day has presented. She lets her eyes wander over the warm reds, oranges and browns of the balding maple trees, letting them warm her. The perfect way to think your way into thinking you’re warm
She lets her eyes wander over the entire park, watching the little 5 year olds running through the leaves. Watching the mothers and fathers hold them when they come running to them shivering like the leaves they just ran through, and asking to go home to drink something hot and change back into the pajamas they previously couldn’t wait to pull off in their haste to come to the park.
So funny, the way they change their minds so fast at the slightest bit of cold, she thought as she watched the family walk away towards the parking lot to return home.
She turned her head in the direction of the walking trails and fountain and found the very thing she was wishing to avoid; couples. Lily had come here specifically to get away from the sickly sweet atmosphere of her brother and his girlfriend who had been filling the house with an unbearable amount of sweetness that came from being in love.
Her parents weren’t very helpful in making her feel better; they did everything together, and it never ceased to amaze her at how much they loved each other after being together for so long. It hurt just to think about it; she was seventeen, senior year of high school and she had never had a steady boyfriend, never had anything remotely close. She was surrounded by people who had already found their soul mate, already had their one and only to be with forever. She was still staring at the couple on another bench by the fountain, the image of love and its actions forever burned into her mind with his arm draped around her shoulder and the girl bringing herself closer to him.
Suddenly a strong gust wind blew through the park, and Lily quickly crossed her arms, and started rubbing up and down to produce some sort of heat. Closing her eyes against the bitter cold that bit at every uncovered patch of skin.
She looked to the couple again, and saw that the man had brought his arms around his girlfriend, pulling her closer to him so that he could absorb the worst of the cod air. She hid her face in the crook of his neck, and huddled as close as possible to him looking for the warmth of his skin through the heavy jacket.
Lily’s eyes began to water, and she turned away from the unbearable sight, mocking her in its unbelievable beauty, the freezing air biting even worse at her tear stained cheeks.
She got up, an started making her way back home, tears running down her features with increasing intensity. And as she left, she knew the exact reason why she was crying. She knew that she would never have a boy to love her as much as the young man had loved the girl; she knew she would never have the warmth that came from another’s body next to yours
She knew that she would never have a boy’s warmth to turn to, the love behind the warmth, and that’s what hurt the most.
A/N: I’d been wanting to write something that expressed how not everybody has a person to turn to when their alone, and what it feels like. I purposely didn't write any descriptions so that you could better fit into Lily's shes and feel what she feels. Well, I hope you liked it, and if you want to, tell me how much you liked it, and what you liked, in a review.
