So, I’ve been in a rather song-ficy mood lately and I have yet another one for you. The song is “Shadow of the Day” by Linkin Park. And if you haven’t checked out their new album, you should because it totally rocks.

This story is just one that’s been floating around in my head for the last few weeks, it’s not fantastic, but I think it came out pretty well.

Enjoy!

She stuffed the last t-shirt into the large black trash bag before her and turned to look at the room. All she had left were a few books, and then she would be fully packed and ready to leave. A knock sounded at her door and she called for the person to come in as she picked up the books and walked towards an open box.

“Nearly packed?” he asked quietly.

I close both locks below the window

I close both blinds and turn away

She didn’t look up, but merely stacked the books neatly and closed the carton. As she turned to pick up the tape, she saw the sadness on his face. Looking away quickly, she turned back to the box. “Yeah,” she replied. “This is the last of it. I’ll be out of here in about an hour.”

Sometimes solutions aren’t so simple

Sometimes goodbye’s the only way

“You don’t have to leave,” he said quickly, his voice choked with pain. “We can work this out, it doesn’t have to end this way.”

“Yes it does,” she replied quietly. “You’ve made that pretty clear.”

And the sun will set for you

The sun will set for you

“I never meant for things to happen this way,” he said, his tone pleading. “I never meant to break my promises to you.”

“Save it,” she said harshly, blinking back tears as she closed her suitcase.

“Baby please, I really did mean for it to be just us.”

And the shadow of the day

Will embrace the world in grey

And the sun will set for you

“Just us?” she echoed softly. “Just us? Who the fuck are you kidding? What do you want me to say? That I forgive the lies and the broken promises and every other fucking thing you’ve put me through? What the hell do you want from me?” she finished with a yell.

In cards and flowers on your window

Your friends all plead for you to stay

“Just give me one more chance, sweetheart,” he begged. “I can make this right. I’m sorry about everything that’s happened. I want you here with me.”

Sometimes beginnings aren’t so simple

Sometimes goodbye’s the only way

“You want me here?” she shouted, losing her temper at last. “You want me with you? You can make everything right? No you can’t!” she screamed. “What about going to Haight-Ashbury? What about camping after graduation? What about going to the Grand Canyon? What about the afternoons of talking and the movie nights and every other fucking thing you promised me? How can you make that right?”

And the shadow of the day

Will embrace the world in grey

“I’m so sorry for all of that, but I want another chance, please,” he said, tears rolling down his face. “Just stay and I’ll make sure that we do things together, that nothing else gets in the way. It can be just us again.”

“No Dad,” she whispered, swinging her backpack onto her shoulders and picking up her suitcase. “It’ll never just be us again.” She pushed past him and walked away.

Watching his daughter walk away, he felt empty. He dropped onto the bed and hugged a pillow to his chest, burying his nose in it as he tried to preserve some memory of the little girl he had just lost.

And the sun will set for you.

Yes, so this is what I should have said to my father when I left a few months ago. This is how it should have gone. I should have told him how it really was, that I was leaving because his fucking wife was making me crazy and it was getting to the point that I would have rather slit my wrists then even consider a future that had her in it. But no, instead I sat there and let him practically ignore me for the whole freaking conversation and act like I was somehow betraying him by not being there every second of every goddamn day so that he had someone to bitch and whine to because even though he's pushing 50, he still can't deal with things on his own.

Anyway, I digress.
