THE NONSENSE OF IT ALL
“I like nonsense; it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living; it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life's realities.” This quote from Dr. Seuss is one of my favorites. Nonsense is something that is normally looked down upon by society as a waste of time, but I believe in the power of nonsense.
When I was little, my favorite author was Dr. Seuss. I read all of his books so many times that I had them memorized. But, as I’ve gotten older, Dr. Seuss is no longer considered acceptable reading material; instead we read the works of Shakespeare and the like. Not that I have anything against Shakespeare, but I miss the simple complexity of Dr. Seuss, and, I miss the nonsense of it all.
Dr. Seuss has some of the most creative books I’ve ever read, and yet they’re for children. Where else can you find the Wocket in your pocket but in the pages of Dr. Seuss? In a way, most things that are creative are viewed as airplane, the light bulb, even modern plumping, all were thought to be nonsense when the idea was first proposed.
Nonsense is necessary. In our lives full of stress and seriousness, a little nonsense can help you get through your day. In a way, nonsense is what makes the world go round. New ideas are sparked and new things are discovered through nonsense. In the words of Dr. Seuss, ‘It wakes up the brain cells’. That’s why, I believe in nonsense.
