Blank Memories

Preface

Hyde looked to the girl who sat calmly, almost emotionlessly on the ground. She made no effort to escape the rain as others of her kind did. No, she sat there her eyes closed. Her long deep brown hair draped over her shoulders and washed like the water over the ground around her. The beautiful Japanese style kimono dress she wore soaked to the skin. He knew only by the blue crystal jewel mark on her forehead that she was different.

He had found her. The lock for the key he now held firmly in his hand. The key would unlock the lock she had. With this he could have the power he so desperately needed.

Without another moments hesitation he walked up to her. It was hard to tell if she was asleep or merely didn’t care that he was there. He reached down to her in search of the lock but her eyes opened and she looked up at him. Her dark jeweled eyes staring into him. He shivered slightly and pulled his hand back. Those eyes made him feel like she could see right through him. He didn’t like the feeling.

“You can not have it,” she spoke, her voice almost as piercing as her eyes. She had an ancient accent that Hyde couldn’t place though he wasn’t sure he wanted too. Everything about her gave him a bad feeling. She knew many things, things he wouldn’t be able to understand. Her eyes told him much.

“I need the lock,” he said seriously trying to keep his confidence, “I have the key,”

“I said you can not have it,” she spoke again her hand going to place itself over her chest.

Hyde didn’t understand. What did he lack? Why did she say no?

“Your soul is weak. You lack in much. I must protect the key from those who could not control it.” She spoke her words simple but they hit him where it hurt. This girl held no fear, not for herself, nor for her life.

“I’m not weak, girl. It’s the lock; it holds power that I need! I don’t need to control it! I need to obtain it!” he snapped angrily at her.

Her eyes grew fierce but she did not move.

“First, my name is Honna. Second, if you can not control the lock’s power then you will die.” The girl, Honna said suddenly. The words came as a sudden shock. He’d never heard of death coming with the power.

“It doesn’t matter how strong you are. Your soul is weak. As long as you lack a strong soul then the power of the lock will engulf and eventually eat you alive from the inside out. Do not be such a fool. The cost for power is much.” She explained knowingly. It was as Hyde thought. She was much smarter and older then her young, small form let on. She’d been around for many years longer then he had.

“How do I make my soul strong then?” he asked needing desperately to know.

Honna’s eyes calmed slowly and she closed them. She was silent for some time before opening her eyes and once again looking up at him.

“Only you can know that answer. Only you can find the answer. I do not know.” She said softly. She seemed suddenly innocent. He didn’t understand it. The look in her eyes seemed to hold a hint of regret. He had a feeling that she’d told this to many others before him. Obviously, none of them had ever come back or they were never strong enough.

“I’m going to figure it out. I have to stop them.” He assured her. A small hint of a smile crossed her features and she nodded slightly.

“Then I look forward to your return,”

“It’s Hyde,” he informed her.

“Hyde…” she said softly to herself as she made a mental note of the information.

“Playing with stupid girls now, Hyde?” a man’s voice spoke up suddenly. The voice was dark, taunting.

Hyde clenched his fists and turned around to face the tall black haired man. His eyes narrowed as he stared the older man down.

“I thought I lost you,” the teen spoke.

The older man merely laughed. His laugh was almost as evil sounding as his green eyes looked.

“Boy, I’m much stronger then you’ll ever be. I tracked you down easily.” The man spoke confidently. Honna watched the two calmly. She seemed much more cautious now though her hand which rested over her chest was now clenched.

“You wish, Judis.” Hyde growled taking a fighting stance.

“Hyde, you will not win. Don’t try,” Honna warned her voice serious. Her eyes held a hint of obvious worry in them.

The teen didn’t look at her as he spoke.

“I don’t have a choice. He works for my father. If I run he might hurt you…then he’ll come after me again.” Hyde warned a frown crossing his features.

“Maybe you should listen to your girlfriend, Hyde. She knows what strength is when she sees it.” The older man, Judis taunted.

“No way,” he snapped back before going in for the attack. Honna watched worriedly. She didn’t wish to see him die. She’d seen enough up until now. She looked away her eyes closed tightly. She feared the memory of what she might witness if she watched.

Hyde’s yell of pain forced her eyes open. Her head turned her eyes set on him. The match, already uneven had turned into a fist fight with Judis the already obvious winner.

The look of blood lust that now filled Judis’ eyes worried her. She did not wish to see this. Judis was planning the kill already as he literally beat Hyde to death. She refused to watch this any further.

She rested her hands over the center of her chest drawing a white light from her heart. The two boys noticed and looked at her. She didn’t give either of them a chance to react as she pulled her hands away from her chest and held them in front of her. The lock floating above her hands glowed an ever shining pink. Her eyes widened her pupils gone completely now.

The light from the lock shot out wrapping itself around the two boys before her. She leaned forward without getting up. The final yell came from Judis as his body was destroyed.

Hyde fell back and looked to Honna shocked. The young girl fell to the ground the lock resting in her hands. It looked like nothing more then a normal lock now.

The teen got up quickly and ran over to her his face filled with worry.

“Why did you help?” he asked quickly his voice frantic.

She looked up at him and sat up slowly. Her body, she was unstable, her body failing her now.

“If I had not…you would have died…I have seen to much death…” she spoke her voice breaking.

“What…will happen to you now?” he asked frowning.

“My body will die,” she replied knowingly. “I used the power…of the lock to save your life…”

“I don’t understand!” he said suddenly. He knew she wouldn’t last long. He couldn’t let her go yet.

“I am the guardian…of the lock. I am…merely human though. As this body…is human…it becomes weak upon taking in the…the soul of a goddess and…and the power of the lock. I…will be taken to a new body…and resume my duty as guardian.” She explained slowly.

“How will I find you then?” he asked not wishing to see her leave. Somehow he felt this was his fault leaving her alone again.

“My body…may be different…but it will change…and you will see…only me.” She replied softly. She looked up at him with one final smile.

“Do not give up…in what you seek. Your strength…it will be unmatched...with time…” she whispered before falling, her body fading into the darkness of the growing night. The lock was gone and soon, so was she.

Hyde stood up slowly holding his wounded arm. No, he wouldn’t give up. He’d find her again, no matter how long it took. No matter where the path may take him. He’d become strong, his soul included.

He swore that next time he saw her, he wouldn’t take her life. He wouldn’t leave her alone and unprotected. He would keep her safe. He would stop the evil he sought. He knew now that he wanted too much. Still, he wouldn’t stop in either of his journeys nor would he sit and consider it.

Time was short; his life may end soon, along with everyone else’s. He couldn’t waste any of the time he had. He couldn’t waste any time at all, and with that, he left.

I hope that the (new) Preface was better then the original first chapter. My writing has gotten a lot better since I originally started this story thank-goodness. Anyways, I really liked how this came out. I'm much happier with this then I was with the old version of the story.
Anyways, I hope you all think this was better written then it used to be. I'm hoping to have chapter one out soon. So keep an eye out for it.
Thanks for reading!
