Cause our love is like Magic

Prologue

"Leave me alone. I want to finish this book," the six year old girl said. Her dark brown eyes perfectly matched her chocolate brown complexion. "Ah, come on Rayne, you read everyday and we barely get a chance to play anymore 'cause of your parents." Sitting down in the shade of the tree Steffan continued, "And the one day you actually get to come over, you spend all your time reading some silly book that is just a jumble of words that have been put here and there!" Steffan threw up his arms and stared at her.

Looking up from her book and into his green eyes she put her book down and got up saying, “It’s not my fault they’re all protective of me now and you know it! They’re always saying that I should be careful, that I shouldn’t talk to strangers and that I should behave but they won’t even tell me why!” Stepping back a little he replied,” Okay, okay I’m sorry I said anything, just calm down alright.”

“Yeah, I’m fine, come on then what do you want to do?”

“Um, we can play Catch the Chicken, there’s enough room to run around.” He said. Looking around the space filled with grass and all sorts of flowers. “Yeah okay but if I catch you then…“ letting her voice trail off while looking around she pointed to a pink and white rose that stood in the sunshine gleaming at them from it’s bush. “You have to get me that flower.”

“Hey why should I let you catch me?” he asked looking confused.

“Because Steffan I’m going to be the Grey Wolf and you’re the chicken.” Rayne said, smiling at him. Although she was a year younger than him she had always been the faster runner. “Fine, but why do you want that flower?” Steffan asked looking at it and seeing nothing special in it. “Because it’s different from the others, it’s unique.” Rayne answered looking in the direction of Steffan’s house, “Uh oh don’t look now but...” She said quickly after sighting the pale-skinned blue-eyed girl running towards them.

“Hi Steffan,” she said, smiling at him showing them all of but two front teeth which had been knocked out by her older brother. “Oh, hey Wimp- I mean Whitney” he answered shielding his eyes from the sun.

“Hi Whitney,” Rayne said.

“Oh, hello Rayne didn’t see you there,” she replied still smiling at Steffan, not paying her the least bit of interest.

“Yeah right,” Rayne answered under her breath, she knew Whitney hated her because of her friendship with Steffan but she didn’t care she never liked her that much to be honest. Whitney now twiddling her fingers about said, “Steffan your Mother says that you have to play with me because Rayne has to go home.”

“I do not!” Rayne said, turning to face her, “My Mother said she would come and get me when I have to go home.”

“Well Steffan has to play with me because his Mother says so,” Whitney said looking at Rayne. “I don’t do everything my Mother says you know,” Steffan said facing her too, “Whitney you can’t play with us you’re too little and I want to play with Rayne so you have to go back to the village.” Steffan said while grabbing Rayne’s hand and running off into the woods.

“I’m not little I’m the same age as Rayne!” Whitney shouted after them as she watched them growing smaller and smaller in the distance.

“Arghh, get off me!” Steffan screeched hysterically as Rayne tackled him to the ground near a pile of leaves. “There got you three times you have to get me that flower now,” Rayne, said, standing up and brushing down her dress so it wouldn’t look too dirty when she got home that night. “Fine but next time I’m chasing you because I’m the better runner.” He said while running to catch up with her as she started to run off. “Rayne, Rayne, RAYNE!” he shouted as his third attempt to arouse her from her day dream didn’t go to plan. “Huh, oh I was just listening to that lovely sound; don’t you think it’s beautiful?”

“Uh yeah” he said surprised at her sudden outburst. “I think we should get you back your Mother’s probably looking for you.” Steffan said reaching for her. Jumping past him Rayne started singing, “I feel as light as a feather, as soft as a cloud and at one with nature.” Steffan staring in amazement at how odd his friend was behaving. She was prancing about saying stuff about the clouds and nature. As she came twirling past him he grabbed her waist and dragged her towards their village. Even though he wasn’t a fast runner didn’t mean he wasn’t a quick thinker.

Walking on they didn’t notice the cloaked black figure standing in the shadows holding nothing but a wooden flute.

“What about my flower Steffan?” Rayne whined as they came into view of the village gates. “Just a few more yards and she’ll be home,” Steffan thought to himself, she’d been going on like this for what seemed like ever to Steffan and was starting to get on his nerves so sitting her down by the tree he crossed the area of where her flower was growing. Checking every so often that she hadn’t wondered off again he stood on his toes and was just reaching for it when he heard the most beautiful sound. Forgetting about the flower he looked around for the source of the music, glancing past Rayne’s dazed face and into the woods. Both of them looking around stuck in a trance didn’t quite notice the stubby man step out of the bushes and blow a dart into the neck of Steffan who stood balancing on the wall on which the flowers grew making him fall to the ground.

Rayne who was looking in his direction but not directly at him was knocked out of the trance as she watched her best friend fall to the ground head first. “STEFFAN!” she screamed as he fell getting up she wasn’t aware that the same black cloaked figure was back. She had to get help for Steffan, where could she go looking around she thought of Whitney “If only they hadn’t sent her away,” she thought. The next thing she knew a sharp blow had landed on her head and through a daze she saw a black cloak flapping in the wind, Steffan lying on the ground and then darkness.
