May 17th, 2007 Two-Genre Essay

Even in death, loves goes on. And although people say, “Till death do us part,” it isn’t true. Love, true love survives even through the death of one or both lovers. Such is true in the tragic play of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, and the love poem William and Emily by Edgar Lee Masters. Both works use literary elements such as personification and symbolism.

Romeo and Juliet is the unfortunate tale of two star-crossed lovers, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. Written by William Shakespeare, it shows how love is directly connected to death. “I'll say yon grey is not the morning's eye.” This passage shows personification with “morning’s eye.” Romeo is outside Juliet’s window, and has to go before sunrise, because if he’s found, he will be put to death. Nevertheless, he is there with Juliet because he loves her, and is willing to die for her. At the end of the play, Juliet fakes her death using a strange potion. Unfortunately, Romeo doesn’t get the letter sent to him, telling him of the faked death. So when Romeo hears that Juliet has “died”, he thinks she really has died. He goes to her tomb and kills himself. When Juliet wakes up she is distraught, and kills herself, so she can be with Romeo in death, since they couldn’t be together in life.

The literary element of symbolism is used the poem, William and Emily by Edgar Lee Masters, to show how love lives on forever, even after death. “Together, feel the sinking of the fire,” The passage shows that even though one of them has died, their love has not. And now, the other lover is going to die, and the previously deceased, is still there waiting for them. They spent their lives together, and they’ll always be together. Even in death.

Even when one dies, their everlasting love for another lives on forever. As show in Romeo and Juliet and William and Emily is doesn’t matter when one dies. Whether it be at the same time, or years apart. Those in love, will, at some point be together again in death. This is true for everyone, and everything. When one is truly in love, that love never dies. Even in death, love goes on.
