Chapter 5: The First Shot
The sounds of silence are flooding the streets tonight
And we also willing to commit the crime
Should we expect no consequence (No consequence)
Maybe all lies will pass the test (Will pass the test)
- Eyes Set To Kill
Though the day had started with clear weather and a bright radiant sun, the roads ahead were now dark with gray callous clouds that tumbled along the large hills. The snow reflected what bits of sunlight it could through the dense clouds yet offer little warmth to her.
The car heater blasted while Sean and Marcie sat in silence, only letting some sounds escape from the radio as rock music echoes within the small sports car. She made sure of herself to keep a steady gaze on the right side of her, making mental notes on how particular trees were shaped and if she could spot any houses within running or walking distance from the cabin. She was unsurprised when she found nothing.
A half hour back before they had started this little car trip, she attempted to ask where they were headed too and just like Sean, the answer was a very blunt, and vague answer.
‘We are going to visit an old acquaintance.’ He had said, and that was the end of that conversation.
Now here they were, driving in the middle of nowhere without a signal town in site or even a ray of hope of getting out of this horrible situation. If only she had her ipod with her to at lest try to block out this losing war in her head, she might be able to think of a strategy to get out of here and see if dad was ok.
Dad..I hope you’re at lest not too worried.. She thought sadly, her gaze softening a bit as she found herself dazing off. She didn't even notice her misty eyes were wondering around till she realizes they had landed on Sean.
“Dozing off wont help the situation Marcie.” He murmured lowly, eyes still trained on the road with his back against the leather seat in a lazy fashion. He didn’t even spare a glance towards her as she rolled her eyes.
“One can at lest be hopeful” She remarked sarcastically, hopping her voice sounded somewhat harsh. Yet, with her mind hazy with thoughts, it wasn’t easy to keep it appear that way.
“Its probably the only thing you can do in your case.” He said causally, his lips twitching into a smug smile as he turns his head into the mirrors reflection, glancing behind them as if he could see invisible cars trailing his sleek Mercedes. Paranoia much?
“In my case? Oh don’t act like I wanted to be here. Your were the one who showed up out of nowhere and dragged me out to this god forsaken place.” She hissed through grinding teeth, misty eyes narrowing in annoyance as he just shrugs it off.
“Oh? I thought you liked nature?” He said, green eyes now gazing over to Marcie’s infuriate ones with a look of perfect innocence. She had to practically fight the urge to roll her eyes at the man’s stupid games.
“I do, but what does that have to do with anything? That’s completely irrelevant with what I was stating.” She sighed before glancing back to her window, watching as powdered trees passes it by.
“Well looky here, the princess knows big words. Usually I thought rich chicks were stupid and ditsy.” Sean mocked, lifting one of his defined brows with a furtive smirk.
“Irrelevant isn’t a big word and you know that. And the whole rich girls being stupid and ditsy? Well that only half the population. Some of us do go to school to get an education rather than party and socialize with the stars.” Marcie retorted back, her voice turning cold with ever word that passes through her lips.
“Apparently.” The other remarked, ignoring the girl’s coldness as he turns down another bleak road, the woods becoming thicker as they move into the more wilderness parts of the land.
“Are we almost there yet?” Marcie finally asked through the silence, her voice cutting into it like a knife through butter.
“Just a bit further. Why? Are you getting scared of being in the car with me already?” Sean teased, his jade eyes shinning with something that silently disturbs Marcie as she just shakes her head at his comment.
“No, just getting irritated.” She muttered quietly, her gray eyes gazing heavenwards towards the clouds. How they matched her mood right now was just almost too ominous for her liking.
“Ah.” Was all the man said, the car becoming instantly silence once more. The sound of the tires whooshing by the landscape hums lightly while Marcie merely thinks about her life at home. The car stays like this
“Here we are.” Sean declared as he pulls into the rocked paved driveway, its path leading straight to a large cabin home that had parts made into the side of the hill. Without the path leading to the home, she wouldn’t have even noticed it if it had even smacked her in the face!
This is quite stunning actually. Marcie thought to herself as the car some to a halt next to a stone trail that had remarkable landscaping. It leads all the way up to the cabin that stood upon the hill.
“Oh watch your step, you might just brake a heel.” Sean comments when he shuts his side of the door, looking quite smug as she flushed with anger.
“These are tennis shoes if you haven noticed.” Marcie hisses with her gaze on Sean, her eyes narrowing into slits at the comment. She didn’t feel like she needs to dress up today since he already said it was just an errand. Plus she didn’t do heels to well. It was committing suicide with the sidewalk since she always kept either tripping or accidentally stepping on others toes.
“Or just fall on your face all together.” he adds with ignorance, pulling out a set of keys before and pressing a little button that locks the car. She didn’t quite get his response but for now she would ignore this and continued walk with him, well with some good distance of course as they trailed up the steps to a costume made wooden door. With a few loud knocks the two waited in silence until a middle-aged man had crocked the door open His hair a rich brown while his skin was a slightly tanned.
“Can I help you?” The man asked through a slight accent, one that Marcie couldn’t place at the time as he stepped out from behind the door, looking somewhat bewildered when his eyes landed on Sean.
“Ah Stanley, how are you doing my good man?” Sean inquires with an overly delightful tone, causing Marcie to inwardly cringe at the man’s sudden change in attitude.
“Sean! What are you doing here?” The man exclaims with revelation, deep blue eyes widening as he shuts the door behind him.
“Just came by to do some business for the boss.” Sean said lazily, his expression faintly amused. The man before them seemed to think this over with a firm line along his lips.
“Damson sent you?” He murmurs quietly, appearing somewhat dismayed at the news.
“Indeed. Now will you please welcome us inside? Feels a bit drafty out here.” Sean said and gestures for the Stanley to move aside. Marcie couldn’t believe how impolite he was to people.
“Of course! How rude of me. Who is the young lady with you?” He opens the door and makes room for them to step inside. Marcie met a wall of warm air as that the cold chill away from her body. It was very comfortable.
“Seems you have redecorated since the last visit.” Sean suddenly remarked, his jade eyes wondering about the house with fake interest. He was obviously avoiding the question.
“I’m Marcie. Nice to meet you Mister Stanley.” She explained with a genuine smile, reaching for her hand while the older man grasps hers with a friendly shake. She ignored the glare Sean throws her as the other man returns her smile with a more enthusiastic nature.
“As am I. Please, have a seat wherever you like.” He exclaimed as he directs them to his rather cozy living room. The smell of fresh pine and lemon was faint in the air, and seems to indicate he had cleaned up a bit earlier.
Sean gestures for Marcie to sit beside him as they seated themselves on one of the two couches that sat in the middle of the room.
“Ah, is that the family? Why don’t you let them come out and sit with us?” Sean states as a woman and little girl stood beside the entrance of the living area, their eyes both a similar brown that held curiosity towards the strangers sudden presence.
“Right. Dear, Alexia please come out here and sit with us.” Stanley motions for his wife and child into the room, which they both complied with ease. The little girl rushes over to her father and leaps onto his lap, hugging his chest as she peeks through her long amber tresses over to the assassin and his captive. Her pretty brown eyes fluttered about through long lashes before reaching over to her mother, who stood beside his husband with one of her long delicate hands grasping his.
The daughter was the spitting image of her mother, their features precisely the same as if it were a time line of what the mother had once looked like as a child or perhaps what the daughter would appear in the future. The only thing that was off was that the mother, unlike her daughter, didn’t hold any indication of curiosity. Instead, she seems more cautious of their arrival.
Marcie leans forward a little, looking more directly at the mother as the woman fiddles with her hands. When she notices Marcie’s gaze, she pulls her hands behind her back and the hint of caution that was once in her brown hues was now a mask of unconcern. From the corner of her eye, Marcie perceives Sean’s interest was also on the woman and had saw her little display she had made in front of the group.
A small cough brings their attention back to Stanley, who was now bouncing his daughter on his right knee, blue orbs showing a sliver of weariness before he clears his throat.
“Now as you were saying?” He inquires through the short silence, bring Sean back to the point as the assassin’s gaze sharpens.
“Well as you know, I’ve come here on the orders of Damson.” He explained uniformly, pausing for just a short bit as he thinks over his words.
“He needs his 20 grand that he lended you back.”
“He does?” Stanley inquires with plain puzzlement; his blue eyes focusing on his little bouncing child on his leg. Sean frowns at this.
“Yes, and he personally wants it as of now.” He retorts softly, watching the father before him twitch his lips into a half smile.
“..I see.” was all Stanley could manage as he places his daughter beside her mother, letting the girl cast her father a perplex expression while she grips her mothers dress in response.
“Is there a problem with that Stanley?” Sean said with hint of suspicion in his emerald eyes, his once lade back appearance turning from a lazy blond feline to that of calculating predator. Marcie could now see how true assassins work. They can lie back and wait while blending with everybody else, but once their demure changes, they’re just as lethal as any marauder would be.
“Well..well you see we really don’t have it at the moment.” Stanley said, as his blue eyes seem to look anywhere but Sean’s heavy gaze. The assassin in general was becoming more and more distant.
“Ah, really? Why is that?” Sean asked with a somewhat curious patients. The way Sean was acting was starting to send chills down Marcie’s spine.
“Can you please let my family go back?” Stanley nodded over to his wife and daughter, who were now staring at him with questioning eyes.
They have as much as a speck of clue as I due. Marcie thought solemnly.
“Of course, they may return to your rooms.” Sean said. Well, it had seem that way until Marcie saw right through it and realized it was more of a command than anything. The little family hesitated before leaving the room; their eyes were still locked onto Stanley’s before they disappeared down the hall.
“Now, why don’t you have it?” Sean said as he leaned forward, his gaze neither wavering nor glancing away from the other blue hues. Stanley on the other hand, was still trying to look anywhere but to the assassins.
“I..I gave it to someone else..” Stanley said as his words quivered, his hands were now in his lap and shaking.
“Gave it away? To whom?” Sean asked leisurely, his voice suddenly becoming pleasantly surprised. The chills down Marcie’s back become colder.
“To Burnstone.” Stanley whispered while shutting his eyes, his head bowed in what appears to be shame. Sean only rose a brow at this.
“Burnstone? Now were have I heard that name before?” Sean said with his gaze heavenwards, a thoughtful expression crossing his amused features. He lightly tapped a finger on his chin for a minuet before lazily standing up, letting his muscles stretch just a bit, his green eyes becoming cat like while examining the man that sat across from him.
“Ah now I remember, its our rival corp. Now, why on earth did you give the money to our adversaries when we are clearly protecting you from them?” Sean question with indifference while placing his hands upon the coffee table that was just separating Stanley and him. The way he was acting, was just unsettling to Marcie.
“You wouldn’t understand..Damson wouldn’t understand.” Stanley said weakly, his voice starting to sound pleading; his hands roughly running through his hair as he kept his gaze down on Sean’s hands. Sean didn’t seem to like his response.
“Then enlighten me.” Sean said, patiently waiting for the man to reply. Stanley just shook his head.
“I cant.” He murmured, still shaking his head. His brown locks tumbled over his face, covering his blue eyes from the Sean’s view.
“You cant...?” Sean repeated slowly, leaning in dangerously close. The predatory gleam that was once in his eyes seemed to shine like that of a excited cat’s. One that was probably weighing in from the big cat family rather than a little old measly one we kept in our homes.
“Yes, I just cant.” Stanley said again, His face solemn as he looked up to Sean, blue eyes reflecting a pained emotion.
“I don’t like that response Stanley.” Sean hissed, finally losing his lethargic exterior.
For some strange reason Marcie could shake off the feeling that something was behind her. She side glanced to the window, feeling a pair of eyes on her back. Yet, when her gaze landed on the bushes, there was nothing.
“Please Sean, just go. I’ll get the money I swear.” Stanley pleaded, reminding Marcie one of those bad mob movies that her father used to love to watch.
Idiot, a man is actually begging and here you think its bad acting? Marcie thought with disgust, Her eyes narrowing at her own inanity. You should be worried if Sean is going to kill the poor man!
“Stanley..You know the rules just as I do.” Sean said sternly, his jade eyes becoming cold as his voice grew distant.
“Of course I do.” Stanley mumbled and then reached into his pocket to find something.
But, as Marcie soon realized, he wasn’t reaching into his pocket. Instead, his hand was reaching for a holster, which inside held a very familiar object.
Oh god..Marice thought as her heart pace speed up. her hands trembled along the couch as she felt her mind throbbing with alarm.
“Stanley?” Sean questioned as the once quivering man stood up, eyes locked onto Sean’s.
“I’m sorry my friend, but I can’t tell you. Please Sean, I really didn’t want to do this, but they forced me. I need that girl you have in order to spare my family.” He said this while holding the gun to Sean’s head, eyes never leaving his as Marcie freezes in place. Sean on the other hand cautiously rose to his full height with a genuine look of disorientation.
Huh? Marcie thought with wide, perplexed eyes. Why me?
“Why would-“ Sean started but It was caught off when the window behind them abruptly shatter, glass shimmering in the living room light like tinny diamonds as they scattered along the wooden floors seemed to take everyone off guard.
The next thing Marcie knew was her body was being thrown down to the ground with shear force as another body blocked her from something whizzing by her with deadly speed. She couldn't think of what it was at the time, but it made impact with something solid.
She tried to figure out what was happening, but all she could hear were the rest of the windows breaking as a distant hums made contact with the walls, a sound much like those big fire works going off on the fourth of July.
Later, she realized, they were gun shots.
