Excerpt from the Sword of the Guardians
A green flamed arrow flew through the air, skewering the chest of a flying earth dragon. The creature’s body went into a spasm in mid air, before dropping lifeless to the ground. Johnny readied another arrow as he stared around at the grounds before Vincent’s castle. Beasts of unrecognizable origins assaulted the kingdom. It was a good thing they were warned of this attack when they were, or the entire kingdom would have been destroyed and many people killed. Raising his bow to shoot, what looked like a cross between a drake and a Swamp Crawler, Johnny loosed the arrow. It flew true and impaled the strange beast through its neck. Readying another arrow, he turned to where Kain and Shawsa fought side by side.
Although Shawsa was a few years younger than himself, Johnny had to admit the girl was good. With having an injury, she held her own, even without Kain’s aid. Her sword flew like a silver streak through the air, killing anything and everything that assailed her. Johnny smiled knowing the two of them need not his aid, and turned his attention to his king. His personal guard surrounded Vincent, but most chose to stay out of his way knowing what might happen should they miss a step with him. It had never happened before, but none took the chance. They did not want to break with tradition and stood back, guarding Vincent’s back instead.
Johnny’s head shot to the right as he heard a scream erupt from one of the female peasants. The war party was surrounding the gates of the kingdom, trying to protect the kingdom’s people as they rushed to get into the safety of the castle’s walls. Johnny’s eyes darkened and he raised his bow once more as he noticed a half man, half serpent trying to consume the peasant and the child she desperately tried to protect. Once again the arrow flew true, splattering the peasant in blood from it. Luckily this was not the first battle, nor the first time it had happened to her, and she quickly recovered from her stun. Grabbing her child into her arms, she made her way to the castle’s gates safely.
