“The cold front moving in from the west will lead into this weekend and the beginning of next week……” The dull voice droned on from the TV in the back round. The cold front seemed to be a representation of his mood. He sat in the kitchen were his daughter had spent the first sixteen years of her life growing up, now felt empty and cold as the reality of his decision came to weigh on his shoulders. His sister sat across from him pale and fidgety, lost in thought of the finality that would come from this discussion. It all came down to what was best for his daughter.
His sweet little girl Marissa Marie Kain his little Mia, His life after his wife had died delivering her into this world. From then on it was all about his little girl and making her happy. Admittedly he probably spoiled her to much, so much that it became all about her and letting her do what she pleased, though surprisingly she never took advantage of him, never asked for things that would break the bank, she was so much like her mother. That was probably why she had been in that ally the night of the attack.
The attack, his world had been shattered that night. She’d missed curfew by an hour, which was late even for her, he’d been pacing restlessly waiting for her to walk threw the door or call. Then the phone rang, he’d jumped thinking it was her, but it had been the police calling about his daughter. She’d been attacked and left for dead in an alley not to far from home. He had raced to the hospital, only to find his little girl in a comma.
He’d devoted the last five years to trying to find any cure to wake his baby. But nothing prevailed. NO doctors or any new found treatments could wake her from here sleep. When he asked why she hadn’t woken they had no answers, only one doctor in all the five years gave him a theory that stuck with him.
“I’m sorry Mr. Kain the treatment doesn’t seem to have any effect.” Spoke Doctor Martin his voice filled with sincere regret. His head sunk once again he was back where he started, without his baby girl. This was the 17th doctor in 8 months that could do nothing.
“Why doctor martin, won’t see wake up she’s healed, she been showing signs of brain activity, so what wrong?” he’d asked in anguish
Doctor Martin shook his head before answering. “I don’t know I’m sorry.”
He’d nodded and turned to walk away to be alone with his grief, but a hand on his shoulder had stopped him.
“There is one theory that has never been proven in the medical world.” Dr. Martin began, his head had snapped up at the words.
“There are instances where the physical injuries heal, but the pyhcoigical never do. It could be that though your daughter is in the best of health her mind went into to hibernation at the time of the attack to protect it self. Her mind may not realize that it’s safe. The attack may have locked her mind away in a safe place.” He’d continued
He’d absorbed the words; in reality they’d made since.
“But again its never been proven because though we can detect brain waves we have never been able to detect the thought process that goes threw the minds of coma patients.” Dr. Martin had finished
He’d nodded and Dr. Martin had stuck out his hand, he’d shaken it.
“Good luck to you Mr. Kain, I hope everything turns out good in the end.” Dr. Martin said in parting before walking down the hospital corridor.
He’d kept those words with him, they were his daily hope that his little girls mind would wake up from the safety induced haze and wake up. But now little but little each day he died a little more, each day when his little girl remained in the coma his self assurance that she’d wake and they’d move forward dwindled.
He glanced at his sister Terry, still lost in thought, thank god for her. After the accident she’d picked up her life out in North Carolina and headed for New York to help him. There parents had retired there and left the house to her, paid in fool, her being an up and coming artist had rejoiced at having a home over her head. But she never left to continue her passion, she’d stayed with him. Making the ultimate sacrifice, most would have left after and year and gone back to there life, there career, but she’d stayed and picked up a job at a local office to help with the bills. His sister the unconventional who had always hated the normal 9-5 job with a passion had given up everything to help her big brother. He didn’t know if the situations were the reversed that he could have done the same. But regardless he thanked the god everyday he’d had her to lean on.
It was time for him to decide, though he didn’t want to afraid that if he did he might die with his daughter. The doctors had been advising him for years to take her off life support, but he’d always refused even after the insurance had stopped paying the bills, and they’d had to go to court to try and get finical help with the medical costs. But now if he when he thought about it maybe he should have. He loved his little girl and wanted to give her peace, maybe keeping her alive for the last five years had prolonged her suffering, the thought made his heart ach. She was the last connection to his wife and his life, maybe he’d kept her alive for his own selfish wants of not wanting to let go, to admit he’d failed as a parent. He hadn’t been there when she’d needed him, instead of looking for her he’d been sitting at home waiting for her return. She’d been attacked not far from there home, if only he’d gone looking for her maybe he could have stopped the attack, or at least found her quicker, maybe then she’d be graduating college now instead of in a comma in a stale hospital room.
He clenched his eye shut his nostrils flared and he turned his head clenching his jaw in an attempt to keep the what- ifs from drowning him. He knew it was time. He had to decide what was best for his baby. Letting her pass on and be with her mother or keeping her stuck in the hospital hooked up to machines. It hurt like hell but he knew what he had to do, what decision he had to make.
Looking up, taking a deep breath to try and quench the tears that were prickling in his eyes he looked over at his sister, to find her looking back at him her eyes glassy, she also knew what choice had to be made, and he prayed it didn’t kill them both.
“It’s…” his voice came out a horse whisper, like he hadn’t spoken in years, his throat felt raw like sand paper. His sister’s eyes locked on him.
“Its time” he began again, blinking back tears, his throat tightening “to let my baby go.”
He said and dropped his head into his hands his shoulders shaking in silent sobs. He felt his sister’s hand on his shoulder leading into a comforting hug, when a shrill noise interrupted the room filling with despair.
Ring
Ring
The hand slipped away,
“You stay I’ll get it” he listened to her foot steps trying to distract himself from the decision that broke his heart. He listened as she answered.
“Hello.” A small pause, and then a deep breath was taken from his sisters lungs
“Hi Dr. Starz” The distraction was over Dr. Starz was his little girls doctor; he’d chosen to take her off of life support. He felt his pain creep up and threaten to strangle the life out of him like he was doing to his only child.
A distant gasp and a thud brought him back to reality. He glanced over to his sister to see her frozen in place the phone on the floor, tears streaming from her eyes like a waterfall, he raced over.
“What” he shook her “what happed is it Mia?” he shook her again “is she dead” The word dead snapped her out of her frozen trance.
“No, she’s…” more tears fell from her eyes
“What, she’s what dammit” he said fear gripping his heart
“She’s awake” his sister finished cased a numbness to spread threw his body, causing him to collapse. Tears pored down his face, he didn’t try to stop them, he wasn’t sure if he could. Mia. Awake. Alive. Awake. Kept running threw his head. He felt his sisters arms around him felt her tears threw his shirt; they stayed like that till a yelling from the phone brought them back to reality. Mia. Awake.
