Chris smiled over at me, looking like she was planning something. She had snuck off somewhere a few minutes ago, leaving me with a group of my 'friends' who were really not much more than acquaintances for all they knew about me. I wish I could ask what she was up to, but I never got a chance.

In the tailor-made men's suit she was wearing, Chris looked stunning. It fit her well, downplaying her more girly features, and making her eyes shine brighter in contrast with the dark coat. Her short brown-blond hair was going at least ten different directions, somehow managing to highlight her eyes even further and make her look more boy-ish at the same time. Over all, she looked exactly like the stunning young gentleman she was pretending to be tonight.

She was doing it all for me, because I wanted to come to this dance tonight, with her. My school would never allow two girls coming together as more than friends, though, and I didn't want to cause trouble. So, for me, Chris chose to dress and act like a man. Because she loves me.

I love you, I could hear her say in my mind even as I thought that. She had said the words to me first, just before we entered the dance, and so her voice was fresh in my mind.

The next song that was played was a slow song. Or, more specifically, Reba McEntire's I'll Be. Chris made her way over to me, interrupting the conversation my friends were having. She bowed slightly, like a gentleman would a hundred years ago, and held out her hand, now donning a white glove, as she asked me to dance.

I smiled, then, as I realized what she was doing. Slowly, and gracefully Chris would later tell me, I curtsied and accepted her hand. We had a few more eyes on us, I noticed as Chris led me to the dance floor, people almost unconsciously making a path for us to the middle. Once in the exact middle of the dance floor, we started dancing, slowly, closely.

I felt like a princess, then, dancing with my one true love. I looked like it too, I knew. We both looked the part.

The song ended all too quickly, and a round of applause went up. Looking around, I realized that just about everyone had been watching us dance. I looked back a Chris, a little embarrassed, to see her with that same devious smile on her face from earlier.

She planned this! I realized. I laughed, and threw my arms around her.

"I love you," I whispered quietly as her arms went around me.

Pushing me away slightly, but keeping her arm firm around my waist, she led me off the floor, kissing the top of my head when she thought no one would see.
