Dormant

Emerging into the demanding day,

noise assaults my tired ears.

Voices, overly enthusiastic for the neon number,

crash into my consciousness

and push the precious dream

to the edge of oblivion.

I know I crave that dream.

My morose mood reflects the loss of the unknown.

There was something there I desired –

desperately, tenaciously, passionately.

Try as I might, I cannot call it back.

Until…wait! That was part, there,

that fragile perfect moment

I now cling to like a long-lost memory.

A cleared kitchen, a rasp of rough lips,

a cherished face that once graced my eyes.

-more follows: sounds, sensations,

flashes of felicity scattered and tantalizing:

Considerate companions kindly exit.

Sighs as I savor the shell of his ear.

Beloved body clasped closer, melting,

Holding, soothing separation’s tears.

Sweet incarnation of dormant desires,

I’d almost rather have not reawakened

my ache for the dreams I’m denied.
