Push Me Down

You push me down

Each time

You call my name.

I slouch down

Even further

Into my seat

And hope you don't pick me.

But you do

And all eyes in the room

Are turned on me

And I say the answer

In my small voice,

The voice of the timid mouse.

Stupid me,

I say the correct answer!

Suddenly

Everyone hates me

I'm the know-it-all

The teacher's pet

And all eyes are on me again

But this time,

They hold glares of ice.

You push me down

When trying to praise me

But it doesn't work.

Because all you do

Is humiliate me

And embarrass me.

And it's not even my fault

That you choose to do this

That you should pick me

Instead of the other student

That one who studied the material

Really hard.

That you praise my work

And ignore that student who put effort into his.

That you push me down

Every time

You try to help me.

For any and all teachers who have ever singled out one or a couple students and praised their work and their work alone. It doesn't help the students at all. It just makes things worse.
