Note: Its a really short story i had to write for my English class. I didnt change anything and i just threw in some required Vocabulary. Hopefully it'll get me a passing grade anyways. I thought i might as well post. enjoy i guess.
“M-man it’s c-cold.” I whispered to myself as I carefully peeked out of the barns open doors. I scanned the empty clearing, searching for any sign of movement. I saw nothing but more snow falling lazily to the earth. My jaw was beginning to shake uncontrollably now. I sighed to myself as I painfully unlocked my leg. I had been sitting cross-legged on the barn floor for almost an hour now. Outside the ground was littered with fresh snow. It had been only an hour ago that I had been inside the warm house, begging my brothers and their friends to play a game of hide and seek with me. My unprecedented nagging finally getting on their last nerves, they agreed to one game.
Unfortunately for me, they all ran back inside as soon as I was well hid as they invariably did when they played games with me. I don’t know why I thought this time would be any different. When my brothers had friends over, they didn’t want to affiliate with me at all. Actually it was like that even when their friends weren’t there.
I sighed again. It was about time I headed in, there weren’t coming. I slowly got to my feet and headed inside. I opened the back door leading into the kitchen. I walked inside and stopped suddenly as I came face to face with Brent.
Brent was the oldest of my brothers and the ring leader of the group. They acted as if Brent were a god almost, following him around everywhere, waiting for him to give a command.
I glared at him, putting as much anger and hatred as I could muster into this one look. I must have looked pretty stupid because he gave me one of his pompous grins as he walked past me, slamming his shoulder into mine as he past. That, I knew, would be the last time he did that to me.
I stood there fuming. I wanted revenge for all the times he humiliated me, for all the times he left me out in the cold. I wanted to see Brent squirm. A smile formed on my lips as a thought occurred to me. Oh would this be so perfect to get him back.
I knew for a fact that today was a Wednesday, and almost every Wednesday, Brent would sneak out of the house, through his window, to meet his girlfriend for a few hours. This was my chance to finally get him back. I smiled broadly at myself as a plan formed in my mind. I went to my room for the night, waiting for the moment Brent decided to sneak out. It would be a few hours, but I was ready.
It had been hours since I had entered my room. My eyes were getting heavy now as I lay on my bed. Just a few more minutes until midnight. Brent always left at midnight. I closed my eyes for a moment, thinking how nice it would be to fall asleep right now.
That’s when I heard it. The sound of a window finally opening. Brent was finally leaving! I waited for a few minutes before quietly leaving my room and sneaking into Brent’s. I couldn’t help but laugh out loud as I walked over to his window and locked it. Now when Brent came home, he would find me laughing at his window.
Brent would have to knock on the front door to get inside the house then, which would be answered by our steaming mother, who liked her beauty sleep. I jumped on Brent’s bed and lay down. I might as well get some sleep while I waited. It would be a few hours before he came back.
It had been four hours since Brent had left. I awoke with a start as I heard someone trying to open the window. Brent jumped back in surprise when he saw me climbing off his bed. He recovered quickly.
“It’s stuck!” He whispered franticly as he tried to open the window again. “Help me get it open.”
“It’s not stuck,” I informed him lazily. “It’s locked.”
Brent just stared at me for a second, confused. “Well then unlock it!”
“No, No. I really think you should just go knock on the front door.”
“Just unlock the window Kim!” Brent hissed in anger. “Jeez, what I ever do to-“He stopped mid sentence when he saw the look of anger appear on my face.
“You can knock or freeze.” I told him. “Your choice.”
“Please Kim! Please don’t make me knock! She’ll kill me! I’m too young to die!” he pleaded. Brent was on his knees as if her were praying.
“Oh how sad.” I said to him sarcastically. I was loving every second of this. “Go knock on the door.”
“Please Kim!” Brent begged. “I’ll do anything! Just don’t make me knock!”
My eyes flashed in interest at this ‘I’ll do anything’. “I’m listening.”
Brent hesitated as he thought. He was beginning to shiver slightly from the cold. “Chores?”
“Chores.” I repeated. “Chores are good.”
“I’ll do all your chores for a month!” It was plausible, she would give him that much, but it wasn’t enough.
“What else?” I asked with a grin.
“Um…” Again he hesitated. “Hide and seek?”
My smile grew wider at this.
“And hide and seek as many times this week as you want!” He hissed as his jaw began to shake as well as the rest of his body.
Click…
Brent climbed through the now opened window hastily. He hugged me joyfully. “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” He told me.
“If you break our little deal,” I informed him as I shoved him away from me. “The next time you sneak out, I will lock the window and walk away.” With that I left the room, leaving him to just stare in wonder at me.
