Moonset

There's only static on the radio tonight
Endless noise; a silent, empty message
I can still remember you sitting there on my bed
Turned into diamond dust, those promises you made

Your fingers played the finest tunes that night
You drowned in them when you closed your eyes
Holding that old, red guitar close to your chest
Blending memories and tears with your goodbye

"You still amaze me," you said to me
Your eyes traveled the lonely walls and tables
Trying to remember every single second in time
Stranded between tears and smiles, fire and ice

Your words still bounce, echo against the walls
Your eyes burned me, your smile left me cold
All while you still played that guitar, softly
Caressing the strings, tender and reverent

What a beautiful night that was, I recall
Moonless, the sky hidden by the ebony blanket
And the stars, oh, those stars, they sparkled
Sparkled so bright with nothing to outshine them

My room seemed so small, the air growing thinner
You always made me feel like that, trapped and guilty
But you still continued to play your song, softly
Your eyes closed and that sweet smile on your lips

Do you still remember that night, so long ago
It feels like I'm on this journey, by myself
Do you still feel haunted, vulnerable, lonely?
Do you still fear those demons, or have you found heaven?

We created that heaven together, remember?
But as that moon, some things are meant to disappear
Heaven will resurface, darling, you just sit and wait
Because I'll still be waiting here, always for you

And tonight, just like that night of so long ago
I'll turn on my radio and hope to hear your tune
And I'll try to picture your smile and your eyes,
And close my eyes as well, so I can forever be lost in you
