Red Carpet
The lied when they said life would roll out a red carpet for me,
That I could parade down the ruby river of velvet and wave to my fans,
Smile endearingly at the paparazzi so that they’d put me on the cover of TIME magazine.
They didn’t lie about it being there.
It’s there alright, red velvet rolling down the school hallways,
down onto the stage, right under the peeling paint in the auditorium.
It even rolls up the stairs to my back door.
But they lied when they said it’d be me walking down it.
I suppose I could if I wanted, but most days,
I just don’t have the time,
I don’t have the energy,
I don’t really care.
Let someone else make the music video,
I’m fine dancing through the halls belting the lyrics.
I’m happy like this.
I don’t need the carpet.
I’m good with behind the scenes.
