Letter
The creased paper lay in her hands,
folded and unfolded so many times.
She sat, not looking at it, staring out the window.
Imagining he was there.
She leaned up against the window frame,
nose pressed against the cool glass.
She turns, leaving imprints behind her as
she walks across the room and out the door.
The letter lies uncomfortably on the floor,
calling out to her through the door.
It surrenders to its solitude as
the afternoon light slowly lengthens,
shadows thrown
across the room.
Suddenly,
the door bangs open
and she rushes to the place where
the letter lies waiting
on the floor.
She picks it up, folds it once more, and
slides it down into her pocket.
“For Keeps.” she whispers to an empty room,
then goes out once more,
her voice echoing behind her.
