This is a modern- really modern, futuristic almost, re-telling of a certain fairy tale. With twists of course!

EVERYTHING will be explained without much headache. See chapter seven and REVIEW ON THE WAY!

Eric struggled out the door, relishing the cool night air as it blew the heat of the party off him. He ran down the front steps and walked quickly down the side street, glancing around periodically for the black angel that his friends and elders swore they’d seen. He crossed the street and onto the path into the park in the middle of the small city, jumping over the creek that ran in the small ditch through the park.

Suddenly, the hairs on the back of the dark-haired teen’s neck stood up and he ran to the nearest streetlight on the other side of the grassy hills. From there, he sprinted to the next one, stopping to glance behind him at the shadow several feet away.

“What do you want?” he yelled. The shadow advanced and drew a knife. Eric backed up, ending against the high stone wall lining the park. He shut his eyes and cringed, awaiting the worst.

An in-human snarl was heard and his eyes flew open. Between him and the shadow was a small dragon like lizard that, even though it was hardly two feet tall at it’s shoulder, had a mouthful of spiky teeth bared at the attacker. The shadow smirked, lamplight glinting off its teeth. The dragon roared and with one burst of its wings and a spring from its powerful legs, jumped at the shadow’s throat and knocked it down. Eric gulped as it lowered its head and tore the shadow’s neck, peeling away muscle and eating it. Its head whipped around, gold-amber eyes locking onto Eric’s brown ones. It growled, blood dripping from its mouth. Eric squeaked in fear as it growled, and he turned on his heel and ran down the street to his aunt’s house. He heard faint clicking noises and paused in his flight to glance behind him at the small dragon following him home.

“What?” he asked. It gestured with its head towards his house. “Keep going?” he asked. It nodded. Eric glanced at it tentatively and rushed up the stairs, leaving the dragon at the end of the driveway.

“Jen? Hope?” he called.

“What is it sweetie?” Jen replied.

“There’s a dragon on our driveway,” he told her. Hope landed softly on the second to last stair of the staircase and brushed by Eric.

“Dragon? Where?” he wrenched open the door and stared out.

“It followed me home from the party,” Eric explained. Hope slammed the door.

“Stop pretending you care,” he snapped. Eric looked at his little cousin helplessly.

“What d’ya mean? I wouldn’t lie to you!” he cried. Hope’s glasses shone in the hall light.

“Leave me alone,” he murmured, heading back to his room.

“I’ll show you!” Eric called. Hope paused.

“Fine,” he snapped and trailed Eric to the streetlight.

“See?” Eric pointed to the dark puddle.

“You’re right. There was a dragon here,” he said softly. The ground lurched and the air shimmered.

“Eric!” Hope yelled. Eric jumped and sat bolt upright in bed. “Mom wants me to tell you that if you’re not awake in… thirty seconds, you’ll be late for school,” the fair head said softly. Eric swung his legs over the side of his bed and stumbled to the bathroom.

“What happened last night?” he asked.

“What are you talking about?” Hope replied. Eric paused, warm water running over his hands, the memory he had been thinking of departed.

“I… I’m not sure…” he whispered.
