Millie Smith walked home from school three days before summer vacation. She was looking forward to this summer most of all; she was finally going down to the beach without her parents. They were planning on making it a family vacation, just her and her parents, but both of her parents got called away on some business trip. Not wanting to cancel the trip for Millie her parents called her brother Mike, how lived in Massachusetts. He was more than happy to take Millie to the beach.

When Millie got home she called her boyfriend, Carl. He was on vacation already and she hadn't seen him since last week. She asked him how his vacation was and he said it was good but not perfect without her. They talked for a few minutes because Millie had a ton of work to do. Even though it was almost summer the teachers still pilled homework on them; Millie was up to her ears in homework.

At long last the summer had arrived, Mike and Millie spent the first day of summer packing for their trip to the beach. Millie was really excited that Mike was taking her, it had been three years since her brother and moved. She talked to him on the phone a lot but never had a chance to visit him.

They arrived at the beach and went to the hotel; which was right along the beach line. Millie couldn't wait to get to the beach, she hurriedly through her stuff down on her bed and rushed into her bathing suit. "Mike!" she called across the room. "What is it?" Mike asked from the living room. "I'm going down to the beach, see you there," without waiting for a reply Millie walked out of the hotel room, towel in hand, and made her way to the elevator. She was so excited to get to the beach that she wasn't looking where she was going. She slammed into another person and fell to the ground. "Oh my gosh I am so sorry!" she said standing up quickly to help up the other person. Then she screamed and threw herself down on Carl how sat there on the ground looking slightly dazed. "Carl! I didn't know that you were at this beach! Why didn't you tell me?" she said excitedly giving Carl a quick kiss on the lips. "I was going to surprise you. I was just on my way to the beach, want to come with me?"

"Do you even have to ask?" Millie replied.

The two walked outside, hand in hand. They caught up on each other's lives while on their way out of the hotel. As soon as they stepped outside Millie was blinded by the bright sun. She squinted for a few minutes until her eyes adjusted to the bright light. When she could finally open her eyes she couldn't help but gasp. The white sand beaches formed soft hills and the bright blue sky was filled with screeching seagulls. Millie and Carl continued to walk up the white sand hills until they reached the top. The wind hit them hard as they started to walk down the slope; Millie gasped as she gazed out at the ocean. The waters were a beautiful bright blue and the waves crashing into the shore where capped with white foam. The whole scenery was enough to take anyones breath away. "Hey you guys!" came a call behind them and Millie turned to see her brother running up behind them. Millie couldn't help but giggle and shouted up at her brother, "Mike, looks like you need some sun!" Mike grinned as he caught up with them and looked down at his white chest, "yeah, i haven't seen the light of day in years!" he said with a grin. Millie laughed and looked back at the ocean. Unable to resist it any longer she let go of Carl's hand and ran into the bright waters.

The next day was storming so Millie spent the day in her room. She had called down to Carl's room and invited him up and he was happy to join her and her brother. They played a few board games that Millie had brought but that soon got boring so they decided to watch TV. Millie took control of the remote and turned to the news channel to see if they would show the forecast for the next day. But something else was on, it was a news report about a shark attack on the beach. Millie turned up the volume as the reporter reported that the girl found dead had been attacked by a Tiger Shark and people should be cautioned when swimming in the ocean until further notice. Millie turned to her brother and asked, "What are the possibilities of getting attack by a shark?" Mike hesitated before replying, "I wouldn't worry about it, that attack probably happened on another beach. Try not to think about it."

The next day the sun shone brightly and all thoughts of a shark attack vanished from Millie's head. Holding on to Carl's hand she smiled up into the sunshine. "I can't wait to get back into the water!" she said, pulling Carl behind her. Mike laughed as Carl lost his balance and fell into the white sand. Millie laughed too and pulled Carl up, "Come on slow-poke! Lets get moving!" she said.

They swam around for a little bit in the blue waters, once Millie had gotten used to the cold she yelled back at her brother and boyfriend, "Race ya!" she shouted before swimming out farther. She battled the current for a while as the waves tried to pull her back into the shore but she continued swimming out, finally the water grew calm. She stopped swimming and began to tread water, looking around. She didn't see Carl or Mike anywhere and guessed they had gone back to shore. She decided to swim back and meet up with them. Suddenly she saw a fin pass in front of her and looking into the clear water gasped as she looked into the eye of a great white shark.

She continued to tread water as the shark began to circle her. She looked franticly along the shore looking for Carl or Mike she didn't see them anywhere and as the shark swam behind her Millie started to swim as fast as she could. The instant she started swimming she knew that was a mistake. The pain that shot threw her leg was so strong that Millie couldn't even scream. She turned her body around and looked at the shark and started to pound on its head trying to make it let go. The shark did nothing but look at her; its teeth sunk deep into her leg. Her blood turned the water around her a slight pink color. Millie tried to pull her leg out of the shark's mouth but that was too painful. She could only float and hope the shark would let go. But then the pain flared into her arm and she looked down. This time she was able to scream out as she looked into the eyes of another shark. This was another great white but was slightly smaller than the other one which was still attached to her leg.

Millie hear a shout near her and she called out faintly, "Carl," before her world became black.

Millie opened her eyes to see white all around her and her first thought was, Oh God, I must be dead. But then a nurse came in and Millie realized that she was in a hospital. The woman smiled kindly when she saw that Millie was awake. "How do you feel?" she asked. Millie replied, "I think so; I don't feel any pain so I guess that is a good thing." The nurse smiled and said, "Yes, thats a very good thing, you didn't even need an amputation. That is rare seeing as not many people survive a double shark attack. The only thing serious you need is blood" Millie smiled back at the nurse than asked, "When can I see my brother and boyfriend?" As soon as she said that the smile left the nurses face. "I am so sorry, they two of them swam out and tried to help you. The sharks attacked them and by the time the rescue boat had arrived they were dead." Millie sat there not believing it the nurse tried to talk to her but Millie ignored her. Finally the nurse left. Millie sat for a minute then slowly placed her feet on the floor and then looked at the bag of blood attached to her arm. She slowly pulled the tube out of her vein and lifted the bag off the hook.

She walked back to the beach slowly with a jacket wrapped around her shoulders and her hospital gown underneath. She passed the "CLOSED DUE TO SHARK ATTACK" sign and walked to the crashing waves. She had a hard time swimming due to her loss of blood and the fighting current. But finally she reached calm waters once again. Treading water Millie raised the bag of blood over her head and dug her nails into it, causing it to burst. The warm blood flowed down around her and turned the water pink.

It didn't take long for a fin to be seen in the distance, speeding towards her.
