“Abigail, wait up,” Kari cried running to catch up with her friend. Abigail turned at the sound of her name and smiled as Kari caught up to her. Abigail had straight brown hair and dark green eyes. She had needed braces for eight years but all that work paid off because Abigail had a beautiful smile. “Where have you been?” Abigail asked, “I have been looking everywhere for you.”
“I had to make up a test,” Kari said breathing hard. Kari had jet black hair and startling blue eyes. Kari was the sport fanatic and was always out in the sun; resulting in her tan skin. It was a Friday afternoon; school had just ended. Kari smiled and said, “Why would you want to talk to me after Jordan asked you out?” Abigail frowned and looked at her friend, “Kari, Jordan knows that my relationship with him isn’t going to get in the way with our friendship. Because of our weekend plans I can’t go to the movies with Jordan so better be happy that we’re such good friends.” Kari smiled and said, “Why on earth would you want to hang out with me when you have the hottest guy as a boyfriend!” Jordan was the star quarterback, but he didn’t act all full of himself; he was the perfect match for quiet Abigail.”
“We had these plans for months and Jordan asked me today so I can’t cancel our plans,” Abigail cried. The two of them were going to go to the mall and then go to that Haunted House that had just opened a few blocks from Kari’s house. Later they were going to go to Kari’s house for a sleep over.
As the two girls stepped outside Kari pulled her jacket tighter around her. The weather had certainly cooled down. It wasn’t much of a surprise seeing as it was the end of October. October 31st to be exact. Kari and Abigail walked over to where Kari’s mom had parked and climbed into her mother’s SUV. The two sat excitedly discussing their plans for this weekend. But death was not on their agenda.
The two friends walked into the mall the next day with purses full of money. They spent a whole day in the mall. They mostly browsed the stores but they soon got bored with that after a while. So then they decided to have some fun. They would go to a section and grab 5 different T-shirts then they would try them on. They did this all throughout the store, occasionally buying something here and there. Then, as the sky was darkening, Kari’s mother came and picked them up and drove them to the Haunted House. Since the Haunted House was only a block from Kari’s house; Kari and Abigail would walk home afterwards.
They got to the Haunted House to see it already had a long line, but that didn’t stop Kari and Abigail; they decided to wait it out. Finally they got to go inside. They were in a small group with four other people. Three of them were chatting the whole way through as they walked through the house. The fourth person sat of to the side, he wore a dark overcoat and a hood so that is face couldn’t be seen. Kari was a little apprehensive of the man but decided not to worry about him. The Haunted House was scary and Kari and Abigail spent the whole time screaming loudly. By the time they had reached the exit their throats were sore. They walked back to Kari’s house in silence for awhile; both were too afraid to speak. The street lights weren’t working so it was really dark and neither had a flash light. Suddenly Kari spun around, looking behind her. “What?” asked Abigail as she looked curiously around. “Nothing,” Kari said, “I thought I heard something.” They walked a little further when suddenly bright lights lit up the surrounding. The girls squinted in the bright light and saw that a car was coming the faint outline of a man wearing a hood could be seen, but the car was on the side walk; coming straight for them. Kari screamed and grabbed Abigail’s hand; pulling her behind. They ran as fast as they could but the lights got brighter and brighter. Kari yelled over the engine, “Abigail, jump into the bushes!” Kari jumped; feeling Abigail’s hand pulled out of hers. Kari crashed into the bushes just as she heard a thud and a groan of pain. Then the car vanished around a corner.
The police arrived soon and the next three hours were nothing but questions. “Did you see the driver’s face? What type of car was it? Did Abigail run out in front of the car?” Kari felt overwhelmed by all the questions but was stirred by that last question. She shouted at the police saying that there was no way Abigail would commit such an act. Kari then relayed the whole story to the officer and then left with her mother. In the meantime an ambulance came and took Abigail’s body away.
The next day was the funeral; every one came up to Kari and offered their sympathy. Jordan sat next to Kari during the service and then stood by her during the burial. The two stood there together looking at Abigail’s grave long after everyone else had left. Then Jordan took Kari’s hand and said, “Let’s go down to the café and I’ll get you something to drink.” In the café Kari sat looking out of the darkened window out into the dark street. Jordan saw her looking and squeezed her hand. Kari looked out from the window and looked at Jordan and smiled back at him. Jordan drove her home afterward and then, at her door, gave her a kiss on the cheek. With a slight blush Jordan hurried back to his car and drove off. Kari stood there for a few seconds touching the spot where Jordan had kissed her. She was confused, she liked Jordan a lot, but she felt that it was too soon after Abigail’s death to be getting into a relationship with Jordan.
But Kari found that she couldn’t help herself. She and Jordan began to see each other on a regular basis. How grave her decision would turn out to be.
