The Killers ‘Enterlude’
“I’ve always felt this way about you, Lydia.” He said as he kissed her passionately. She didn’t know what to do except kiss him back. His lips were so tender and gentle against hers. He was hesitant at first before deepening the kiss. This was strange for her; she wasn’t used to being this close with him of all people. It didn’t feel strange because it felt wrong; it felt strange because it felt right. But his kisses couldn’t feel right; the way he held her close with his hands on the small of her back couldn’t make her tingle. But it all felt right. She put her hands to his face and rubbed her thumbs across his smooth cheeks. He pulled out of the kiss and his deep blue eyes stared at her intently.
“I think I’ve always loved you, Craig.” She said as she gazed back at him. She inhaled deeply and her eyes fluttered open. The room was dark around her with the only sound coming from the ticking clock. Lydia’s breathing slowed down as she realized she was in her bedroom. That had been one strange dream. She threw the duvet of her and realized that she had been sweating. She lay there for a few more seconds trying to remember the dream. Craig had kissed her and it felt amazing. The last time she had kissed Craig was in a game of spin the bottle when she was fifteen. That was over eleven years ago. The kiss in her dream had been a million times better than the clumsy one they had had at that young age.
She threw her legs over the side of her bed and looked at her window. She never closed her curtains at night - except when she had company. No stars could be seen in the night sky due to the orange haze from the lights in the city. She looked at her clock and saw that it was ten past three. There was no way she could get back to sleep now that she was wise awake so she decided to get herself a glass of milk. Her apartment was big enough for two people to live in it, but it was currently only she renting it as she had had problems with her last room mate. It was decorated much like her family home, cozy and warm with pictures of all of her friends and family. The only thing that divided the kitchen from the living room was the breakfast bench. She walked to the refrigerator and took out a cartoon of milk then took a glass from the cupboard and filled it. She walked to the living room and stared out through the glass doors that led to the balcony. She was currently residing in one of the city’s prime real estates because of its situation beside the river. She opened the door and walked out onto the balcony. It was a warm beautiful night as she stared at the sky once more hoping to see the slightest glimmer of a star.
“We’re not in Kansas anymore Toto.” A voice said to her right causing Lydia to jump and spill some of her milk over the edge.
“You scared me.” Lydia said as she put a hand to her chest. She set the glass on the small table she kept on her balcony. She looked over the edge and saw that some of her milk had fallen into Mrs. Hastings prized Tulips.
“Craig you made me spill my milk in to Mrs. Hastings bloody Tulips.” Lydia said as she turned to Craig who was also standing on his balcony two balcony’s over. “If they die you’re getting the blame.” Lydia said as she peeked back over the edge of the balcony. She turned back to Craig once more. He was leaning in the rails looking towards the river. He was only wearing a pair of black sleeping bottoms, his upper body bare.
“I think I’ve always loved you, Craig.” That sentence came flooding back to her causing her to put a hand over face.
“Are you ok?” Craig asked as he turned to look at her.
“I had a really strange dream.” She said as she sat down on a chair that was beside the table.
“Was it a nightmare or fantasy?” Craig asked with a smile. She looked at him and could instantly feel what it was like to kiss him. She couldn’t help touch her lips and remember the softness.
“I’m not too sure, to tell you the truth.” Lydia said as she pulled her gaze away from him.
“Was it that dream where you walked into the office naked?” Craig asked curiously.
“I’ve never had that dream.” Lydia said as she sipped her milk.
“Just me then.” Craig said with a small smile. He was a very handsome man, Lydia had to admit. He had that dark smoldering mysterious look about him. He was often quiet around those he didn’t really know but when he was with his friends he really came out of his shell. But Lydia was the only person that really knew him. They had grown up together and had been best friends since they were ten. They had gone to the same high school, same college, moved into the same apartment building and worked for the same company. Although Lydia would always dispute that he had gotten the apartment and job first.
“What are you doing out here?” Lydia asked as she watched him gaze at the river once again.
“I was just thinking.” Craig said.
“Are you worried about your presentation?” Lydia asked as she watched him. He had no need too he was one of the best architects in the business maybe even the industry. Lydia was in the customer relations department of the business. She was the person whom the clients communicated with when having dealings with the company.
“Not really. We’ve got it in the bag.” Craig said confidently.
“Well you better. If Montana doesn’t like it, I get the brunt of his anger.” Lydia said.
“The guy has a soft spot for you. Trust me it’s not his anger you’ll get the brunt off.” Craig said with a grin.
“Eww the guy is at least eight-five years old.” Lydia said with a shiver. “Although he is very rich.” Lydia said pretending to ponder the thought. She saw Craig’s disgusted face and laughed.
“Shh you’ll wake the neighbors.” Craig said as he pointed to the apartment between their apartments. Lydia quickly settled down as she remembered that the couple that lived there were very light sleepers.
“I think I better go back to bed. I’m meeting a new client in the morning across town.” Lydia said as she stood up. Craig looked at her curiously. “Theo is on this one with me. It’s nothing big just a small apartment building or something.” Lydia said with a shrug.
“I’ll see you at the presentation.” Craig said as he looked at her intently. It was the same look he had given her in her dream. It was the same smoldering gaze that he had used upon her many times before. But it couldn’t have meant what she thought it meant did it? No of course not. It was just a silly dream that was getting to her when it shouldn’t have.
“Night Craig.” Lydia said giving him a small smile.
“Night Lydia.” Craig said softly as he watched her go. Lydia walked back into her bedroom and lay down on her double bed. Craig was just a friend; he didn’t feel that way about her. Even if he did, she didn’t have those feeling for him, did she? Lydia had never really thought about him in that way before. He would make some girl really happy she knew that. He was an amazing friend whom was always there for her when she needed him. He was such a strong person, he was her rock. She would deny it most of the time but without Craig she would be in some dead end job and still living at home. She never understood though how nobody had ever tied him down yet. He had had girlfriends but none of them ever seemed to last more than three months. He would always break it off before there was ever any real attachment to them.
She rolled over on to her side and saw the picture of her and Craig on their Graduation day. He had a genuine smile on his face. She loved that smile. It was only ever reserved for when he was really happy, she had only ever seen that smile four times since they had become friends. She was glad she had caught this smile on camera. She rolled onto her other side so that she faced the wall and closed her eyes hoping to get to sleep. The last thought she had was how soft his lips were before falling into a sleepless dream.
