Mind Games

Behind every curtain is a window,

And every window has a story behind it.

If one can look past the dark curtains,

Something incredible will come into view

Fifteen years ago, the military tested a new weapon underground. This weapon was called TX14, and it contained chemicals that if put together at the right time, would cause devastating affects on humanity. Unfortunately, there was a side affect to the underground testing. 1-6 year old children were infused with one of the chemicals all over the country. The only way they could tell was with a small mark on their bodies. Tests on them showed that none of them had anything truly wrong with them.

At the time.

Once they hit thirteen, however, powers emerged. Ranging from mind warping to controlling elements, rampaging teenagers harnessed their powers. The government knew that as soon as the last of them got a hold of their powers, life would be back to normal. Little did they know that they had set something far larger into motion.

The sleepy sea-town of Lightview sat in the northeastern part of the country. It was a normal town, (More or less, with the teenagers), and many went off to seek something bigger with their lives. For fun, groups of teens would go out and mark territories,. There were two dominating groups in Lightview, one of them, the Tiger clan was lead by the most popular sophomore in town, Jeremie Silph. His sister and younger brother, Cara and Max, advised him, and they were in a royalty-like position. The others were merely henchman, doing the dirty work and marking spots for them to hang out. The other group, Wolf clan, was considered riff-raff, but they were still a force to be reckoned with. The newest leader of this group was Brent Firole, another sophomore. his number two was Kyiela Glenn, who was a good stratigest. She was able to control elements, from water to fire and everything in-between. Brent could bring shadows to do anything he wanted them to do. They had recently taken in a new freshman, Scarlett. Who could shape shift.

So the two groups lead all the others in town. One could call it harmless play, but one would be mistaken.

Room 10-B at Lightview high school was a room full of chaos. Kyiela was sitting in the corner, her blue eyes glittering, and her red and brown streaked hair pulled neatly up in a ponytail. Her blue shirt and jeans were revealed when she dropped her black messenger bag. Her friend, Violet was sitting next to her, purple skirt and top matching her black hair. She was named Violet for the stunning shade of her eyes. She belonged to a subgroup of the wolves, which currently occupied the southeastern part of town near the beach. Brent usually sat in front of her, which deterred most of the other guys in the grade to stay away unless it was official business. He was a tall, brown haired teen that was the star of the Varsity baseball team. Kyiela wasn’t too fond of his knack for scaring away people, considering her and her rare elemental powers could take care of anything that could happen. Brent on the other hand, seemed to see Kyiela as a powerful asset, who shouldn’t be distracted by any guys. Violet sat back and watched the arguments play out with her psychic abilities. Jeremie sat in the front along with his top guard Kevin. Kevin could read people’s minds and could easily predict things. Therefore, he was Jeremie’s main confident, and the teachers pet. Jeremie was determined in his position, not only because the people that resided in the Tiger group were the elite, but he himself had inherited the elemental powers. His Onyx eyes flashed with pleasure at the thought, his raven hair intruding over them. Kevin pushed his rectangular glasses up his nose. Something was clearly pleasing him, as his happy presence warmed up the room slightly.

Sir, please be a little more subtle with your powers.

The room cooled down a little as Jeremie closed his eyes. He was still mastering fire, which was his weak spot.

The teacher walked in to start class, and Brent looked over his shoulder at Kyiela. She was doodling as usual. He sighed. The territory game was getting more stressful, and he couldn’t understand how she kept on getting good grades by doodling.

Kevin was sitting up front, figuring out how to get the last two free territories in town. Both were claimed by the Wolves, the most protected near the beach. The teacher was droning on about World War II, and the battle of Dunkirk, where the 71st air division managed to get all their troops off the beach, while the Germans took it over.

Kevin looked up as he pushed up his glasses.

That was it.

The Wolves met under the pier, where there was a little cottage donated by Brent’s dad, who owned the Marina. The wood stove warmed the whole building, and melted some of the snow around it. The kitchen was combined with the den, there was a bathroom and even a bedroom which was converted into a meeting room. The cherry walls had paintings on them, and the kitchen had a fridge and microwave. The TV sat on a little island that separated the kitchen from the den. Scarlett sat on the old red couch doing her English homework, which was to read Romeo and Juliet. Kyiela came in with her bag wrapped in a black coat.

“Man, it’s freezing out there!”

“Uh, Yeah. It is January.”

“Very funny. Where’s Brent?”

“Tall and Klutzful? Meeting room. Gothic Chick’s in there too.”

“They do have names, Scarlett.”

“I know. But I remember these easier.”

Scarlett grinned as Kyiela dropped her bag and went inside the room, where Brent and Violet were looking at a map.

“You rang?” asked Kyiela, sitting down.

“Tigers are planning something. Apparently they aren’t satisfied with their win last week.” Said Brent.

“They’re going to attack our territory near the school. This means lots of rock, water and air.” Said Violet, pulling out a resource map.

“How many are they sending?”

“About seven.”

Brent looked up, “We have a squad of four there already, Clucky, Zane, Edward and Chris.”

Scarlett walked in at that moment.

“Bird brain, Fire eyes, Claw boy and Psycho.”

“Scarlett, shut up.” Said Violet.

“Therefore, Violet, Me and Scarlett should go.” Said Brent, standing up.

“Um, excuse me, do I get a say in this?” said Kyiela, standing up to challenge him.

“No. If you get hurt-,”

“Brent, I won’t get hurt.”

Kyiela looked straight into his eyes as he sighed.

“Fine. Scarlett, you stay here.”

Scarlett shrugged.

“Alrighty. Homework it is.”

She walked out as the others grabbed their coats.

“Sir, the operation has started.” Said Kevin, walking into Jeremie’s’ room, which had a large bed, walls covered in books, and a giant TV on top of a dresser.

“Who was sent?”

“Morgan, Kelsey, Tyler, Andrew, Hannah and the Rulfhouse twins.”

Jeremie smirked. Victory was sure. He walked out the door into the cold air, which was warmed up quickly.

“I’ll go to oversee then.”
