awkwardness
there is no warning before the storm hits.
enter a girl into a room full of adolescent boys,
(no matter about the physical)
and she will be beautiful, so she is beautiful.
but stars cannot shine when their hearts are broken,
and romance does not agree with normality.
so they are leagues apart
drowning under a surface of stereotypes,
while the path where her breeze and his blush meet
is a veritable crime scene.
all the evidence comes in intangible form:
in the traces of her scent
that linger in the place of that accident.
friendship
caution, this substance is highly flammable
and it is called friendship, that flighty favourite.
so everyone thinks it is all right,
and approaches her with their flames burning bright,
because the snapshots displayed are those picture perfect in kind.
yet secrets lie in imperfection,
when the forever between skin and skin
fills with words inside palpable tension,
when words become too shy to express true joy
in what the world cannot obviously see,
when hearts are worn on sleeves,
and expressions are touching.
familiarity
handcuffed and chained to the weight of love,
that’s he.
she is unburdened, making him want to fly
but selfishness keeps secrets to itself,
and so does she.
are you watching closely?
a game of opposites leads to the championship routine,
where the physics of romance throws away all laws
and leaps off the building
(who cares about wings, they’re so last romance novel anyway.)
ah, young love, this is the life
where you are so precious to me.

Are We There Yet? by David Levithan
author notes
please read that book i mentioned above, it is totally awesome and will blow you off your feet (if you are like me, that is). that single line, along with the title of another book i came across in the library but wasn't interested in, spurred this poem to completion.
