Define me
This many years, this many laughs,
smiles and promises; this is the
number of the tears I've wept for
this many different kinds of pain.
These are the people that I've known,
these are the places where I've lived
and loved and learnt, and built myself,
word by word, as each new sentence -
self-explanatory - forms my
D.N.A. I paint self-portraits
every now and then of who I
think I am that day. The words change
and the pictures show that I am
a girl whose flesh and blood are made
of adjectives and verbs. I can't
explain myself to anyone
who asks me what or who I am;
there are so many words in me
that I can't choose the few that will
define me so completely that
anyone can open up the
dictionary and learn and teach
my soul as if I were nothing
more complex than a common noun.
