Chapter Two

Twenty years later…

“Welcome to yet another detention, Miss Parker.” The detention teacher said as he held the door open for Elyon.

She sighed and walked into the room, taking her usual seat.

The detention teacher closed the door behind her and took a seat as well.

“So, what may I inquire are you here for today?” The teacher, Mr. Spitz, asked.

“Well, you see, there was a paintball gun brought into school. And as a teacher was walking by in the hallway I opened my locker door. It just so happened that the gun conveniently fell out of it at the perfect moment. Unfortunately for the culprit, I know how it got into my locker. But I don’t mind covering for her. Alyssa told me that if she got another detention then her parents would ground her.” Elyon said with a smile as she placed her backpack on the desktop next to the one she was sitting in.

Adam, a boy who was sitting on the whole other side of the classroom, shot his head up.

Alyssa was not only Elyon’s best friend, but also the girl that he had a crush on.

“Did the teacher confiscate the ‘weapon’?” Mr. Spitz asked.

“Yep.” Elyon replied.

“And…are you going to…unconfiscate it?” Mr. Spitz asked again.

Elyon grinned and said, “Naturally.” She then turned her attention to the clock. “She’s coming here to pick me up, and then we’re going to break into the principle’s office and take it back before his coffee break ends.”

“When is she going to come?” He asked.

Elyon closed her eyes with Adam watching her every move. He was curious to say the least.

“She should be here in about fifteen seconds.” Elyon predicted, opening her eyes.

Mr. Spitz paid her strange behavior no mind. Adam, however, was even more curious now.

Adam listened closely. He had ultrasonic hearing so he could hear the footsteps making their way to the classroom.

Mr. Spitz was grading papers at his desk when Elyon stared at the clock and started counting down.

“Five…four…three…two…one…zero—” Elyon whispered to herself.

Right when she whispered zero the door swung open by Alyssa.

Elyon stood and put her backpack on, but before she followed Alyssa she turned to look at Mr. Spitz.

“Don’t worry, I know the plan. After all, we’ve done it how many times now?” He asked with a smile.

She nodded and said, “Thanks again Mr. Spitz. Oh, before I forget, my mom is bringing over an apple pie later for your family to celebrate the birth of your third child.”

Mr. Spitz looked up at her, surprised. “Th-Thank you. But I’m afraid that the baby has yet to be born.”

Elyon rolled her eyes and said, “Well your wife is in the hospital. My mom told me that your wife told her that she is due any day now.”

The conversation officially ended when Alyssa tugged on Elyon’s arm and said, “Come on. We’ve got to hurry or he’ll come back while we’re in his office. Then I’ll get in trouble and you’ll get in even more trouble.”

Elyon rolled her eyes and said, “Alright.”

The two left the room and went into the direction of the principle’s office.

Mr. Spitz watched the two girls go and then turned to the only other person left in the room besides him.

“Not a word of this little ordeal to anyone else, clear?” He asked Adam, though it was more like a demand.

Adam nodded his head, still looking at where the girls once were.

Mr. Spitz smiled and said, “Good. Now, get back to taking that test you owe me.”

Adam again nodded his head and went back to work on the test.

Elyon was currently walking home from school. She was taking a back route that was stripped of all life.

That’s when she felt it. She could feel that she was not alone. There were two other auras on the street she was taking, both next to each other, and both behind her.

Elyon started to walk faster. She had seen this in movies before and it was not something one would want to experience in real life.

No matter how fast or how slow she went, Elyon realized that the two kept the same amount of distance between themselves and herself at all times.

That is when she really started to panic. She did the only thing left that seemed logical…she ran. And along with her, the two others ran as well.

Elyon turned right at a corner and found an empty construction site. She wasted no time in grabbing a long metal pipe. She turned around to face her chasers and held the pipe in front of her like a swordsman would with a sword.

Three seconds later and the two came to a stop from their running. They stopped not too far in front of her but still a good distance away.

Elyon looked at the two boys and realized that she recognized one of them. One of them was in detention with her. His name was Adam, if she recalled correctly. He was also in her grade. The other she did not recognize though.

She raised her pipe higher in a silent warning for them not to get too close.

“Calm down, we’re not going to hurt you Elyon.” Adam said softly as he took a step forward. He had short dark brown hair, almost black and dark brown eyes. The boy next to him had slightly longer light blond hair, bleach blond, and light blue eyes.

Elyon’s own hair, a light brown color, blew slightly in the wind. If reached a bit below her shoulders. Her hazel eyes watched the two boys warily.

The blond boy took a step forward as well. With his step, Elyon took a step back.

“Elyon, please, put the pipe down.” Adam tried to reason.

The blond boy had his hands in his pant pockets, obviously bored at the moment with how things were going, but paying attention and staying calm none the less.

None of Adam’s word convinced Elyon to calm down or discard the pipe.

“Listen here girly. We’ve got better things to do than stand here all day with you, some paranoid and annoying loser. Just come with us quietly and you won’t get any trouble. Not to mention we won’t waste any more time.” The blond boy said.

Elyon narrowed her eyes.

“Kevin, can’t you be kind for once in your life?” Adam asked the boy.

“Nope. My heart’s as frozen as ice.” The boy, Kevin, said. The second sentence was laced with sarcasm.

Adam took another step toward Elyon. That’s when she charged.

She ran toward the two and raised her pipe like a sword just before swinging it.

The two boys dodged just in time. Adam went to one side and Kevin to the other side of her.

“Looks like we’ll have to do this the hard way.” Adam said.

Kevin smirked. She was so naïve. How could she come at Adam and him without using any powers and only a small metal pipe? Pathetic was what it was.

Elyon turned toward Adam and went after him. She ran at him and raised her pipe, ready to strike. He was just standing there, looking behind her.

Elyon tried to get closer so that she could strike but couldn’t seem to move her feet. She looked down at them in wonder and her eyes widened. She dropped her pipe and her mouth fell open.

There was ice surrounding both feet. The ice was keeping her feet to the ground. She noticed the ground around her feet was also iced.

Elyon turned best she could to look behind her with a look of horror.

“Idiot.” Was what Kevin said as he walked forward. “Did you really think you had a chance against us?” He smirked.

Kevin stopped beside Adam and looked at Elyon. She was still standing there, looking horrified.

“I don’t even know why Leaf had us come after her. He said that the radar had gone off because of her but she doesn’t show any powers.” Kevin said to Adam. All he got in reply was a shrug.

“I say we just leave her here to thaw out.” Kevin suggested.

Adam shook his head and replied, “No. Leaf said that we had to bring her to the manor, so we will. There’s no defying him. Come on, defrost her feet so we can bring her more easily.”

Kevin sighed and said, “Fine.” He moved his right hand in front of him, arm extended, and the ice thawed out.

When all the ice was melted and there was nothing left but water underneath Elyon’s feet she just stood there. Perplexed and horrified were her emotions.

The two boys walked over to her. As they got closer, her brain registered what was going on and told her feet to walk backwards. She did.

“N-No! Get away from me! You freak!” She shouted at them.

“You’re not really in any position to be giving orders. There are two of us and we’re stronger than you, even separately, so the wise thing to do would be for you to just come with us quietly.

Adam grabbed her right arm before she could stop him. She struggled against him until Kevin took her left arm. They both held her upper arms with one of their hands and started dragging her away.

“Let me go!” She shouted, still struggling, harder than ever now.

A chuckle could be heard from behind them. They stopped and the two boys, along with Elyon, turned around to see who it was.

“I can’t believe what I’m seeing. Leaf has truly reached a new low if he’s now ordering his team to kidnap innocent little girls.” The boy that had just been chuckling said with a smirk.

Elyon noticed he had brown hair that was somewhere in between hers and Adam’s. It was almost down to his shoulders and was very straight. His green eyes looked amused.

“Steven. Should have guessed you would show up. What do you want?” Adam said, his voice dangerously low. He obviously didn’t like this guy.

Steven took a step forward and said, “I thought that I should step up and stop you two from kidnapping Elyon.”

Elyon cocked her head to one side. Why was Steven, a boy from her math and history classes, here? Her eyes then widened.

Oh no. Please don’t let him be another freak, please. I don’t know where Adam and this other guy are taking me. I’m afraid to even imagine what will happen to me and what they could possibly want with me. And who is this Leaf they speak of so highly? She thought.

Adam’s eyes narrowed. “Why would Lukas be interested in Elyon?”

Steven shrugged, his hands in his jacket pockets. “The same reason Leaf is interested in her, I guess. I don’t really ask too many questions.” He replied.

“What does he know about her?” Adam asked again.

“All he knows is what her power is and what her name is. His system went off when she used her powers earlier. Bell also saw her at school and told him that she couldn’t see a date of death over Elyon’s head.” Steven said.

“Hello?! I’m still here! You three are talking as if I’m not standing right here!” Elyon shouted, annoyed and irritated. She didn’t like to be ignored.

“Shut up. We’re right here. You don’t have to yell!” Adam said angrily. He was wincing from her loud voice at such a close distance. His ultrasonic hearing had picked it up and damaged his ears.

“Then let me go! I don’t know what any of you are talking about! If you don’t let me go I’ll scream right in your ears!” Elyon shouted, not caring.

Steven laughed. “You heard her. She obviously doesn’t want to go with you.”

Kevin had had enough. He iced Elyon from her feet up to under her nose. Her eyes had widened. That would insure that she would not only keep still and not leave, but also that she would be quiet.

Kevin charged Steven and shot ice at through both of his hands.

Steven bent down and touched the concrete in front of him. The concrete started changing into metal. Once it was metal, he moved his hands upward and the metal that was in front of him came upwards as well. He then kept it in front of him and it acted as a shield.

When the ice struck the metal shield, since the metal hadn’t hardened, a little bit of the ice struck through the shield. Not enough to actually hit Steven though.

The ice shattered as the metal cooled and hardened.

Steven manipulated the metal down and back to where it once was before it had shifted to his powers.

“Kevin, Kevin, Kevin,” Steven said, shaking his head as if scolding a small child, “You’ve never been able to beat me before, so what makes you think you’ll be able to now?”

“Mmm!” Elyon tried to shout, though it didn’t come out too clear with her mouth being covered and all.

Adam, Kevin, and Steven all stopped what they were doing and turned to look at her only to see her starting to disappear.

“What’s going on? That’s not part of her powers.” Steven said, confused.

Once Elyon was completely invisible, a scream could be heard. Everyone covered their ears and winced. That girl sure could scream loudly.

“You’re right. That isn’t part of her powers. But it is part of mine.” Said a male voice.

Suddenly a male appeared out of thin air along with Elyon. They appeared behind where the ice prison was.

The man was holding Elyon’s arms with his hands and was standing behind her. He seemed to be about nineteen or so.

Kevin narrowed his eyes. “Travis! What are you doing?!”

Travis looked at Kevin and said, “You think she’ll join us if you keep treating her like that?”

Kevin heard something behind him to see that Adam had now taken on the role of fighting Steven.

“Honestly, three against one doesn’t seem very fair.” Steven said while dodging a kick that would have hit his head if he hadn’t ducked.

“Since when have you ever been fair?” Adam said as he threw a punch at Steven’s abdomen which would have hit had Steven not created a metal wall in between himself and Adam’s fist.

Steven scowled and knocked Adam off of his feet and sent him flying with the liquid metal in the shape of a whip that had previously been the wall.

“Let me go!” Elyon demanded.

“I’m afraid that I am not allowed to do that.” Travis said.

“Well then at least take me somewhere away from here.” Elyon suggested.

“And why is that?” Travis asked.

“Because there are more coming and I really don’t want to be here any longer. I’ll end up getting hurt and as lucky as I have been to not have been hurt yet, I don’t want to take my chances.” Elyon said with small hints of sarcasm here and there.

Both Travis and Kevin looked at her. Adam would have as well if he were not currently engaged in a battle with Steven. Steven had not even heard what she was saying because he was too busy concentrating. Adam, however, with his superior hearing did hear it but paid it no mind because he could not afford to lose any concentration.

“What do you mean by more are coming?” Kevin asked.

Elyon rolled her eyes and said, “What? Can’t understand plain English anymore? There are more people coming this way. Well, running this way. They’re not too far away and will be here shortly.”

“How many people are coming and when will they get here?” Travis asked.

“There are two more and they will be here in seventy-four seconds.” Elyon replied.

“Just over a minute. Well this stinks. Elyon has to have someone escort her back to the institute. She should only need one person for that. But if you leave then it will be two against three.” Kevin said to Travis.

“I am sure you will be able to manage.” Travis said.

Kevin nodded. “Well, I guess you better get going.”

Travis nodded and said, “Right.”

He and Elyon started disappearing. Soon they were completely invisible.

Once Kevin was sure that they had left toward the institute, he turned back around to face the two newcomers. They were coming the opposite way that Travis and Elyon had left.

When they stopped, Kevin got a good look at them. He then smirked. The two were new recruits. This would be a peace of cake.

Elyon panted for air when the two finally stopped. She was bent over with her hands on her knees.

“We’re here.” Travis said as he typed in the code to open the front gate.

Elyon looked up and was awe-struck. It was a mansion! She turned to read the plaque next to the code pad.

It read ‘Rode’s Institute for the Mentally and Physically Gifted’.

“Wh-What is this place?” Elyon asked still partly breathless, though able to regain her regular posture.

“This is the others and my home. We live at the institute, but also train here as well.” Travis said as the gate opened.

“Who’s Rode?” Elyon asked as the two began walking on the long concrete sidewalk toward the front doors over the mansion.

“That’s the professor that started the institute. He runs this place, oversees the training, and takes care of us. Sure, there are some other professors here, but he’s more like the head of the house.” Travis said.

They stopped in front of the door and before Travis got the chance to open it, someone opened it from the inside.

“Hello, you must be Elyon.” A muscular voice said.

Elyon looked up at the tall man and slowly nodded her head. This man was a little intimidating.

“I’m Professor Leaf Rode.”
