Here it is! The edited prologue. I've also editted Chapter 1, so you'll all get at least two new things to read. Let me know if you think it's any better or worse!

Prologue

Innocents.

There aren’t very many left on this Earth.

Corruption runs rampant amongst us. It’s hard to find anyone who hasn’t been touched by the Taint.

Mostly, Innocents are children. The ones who haven’t been exposed to the world, to the possibility of meeting one of them.

There are three groups of people in this world. First, there are the Innocents; they are the special ones, the important ones, the ones who must be protected at all costs. They are the hope of our civilization. To be Innocent means to be clean, unsullied, morally pure. To be Innocent means to live.

Then there are the Tainted. Generally harmless and hopeless, they’ve been defiled, corrupted, and ruined. Once you are Tainted, you merely exist; live and survive and be in the lowest, meanest sense, and for the shortest time. Once the Taint has entered you, you have 5 years left to live.

Finally, there are the Infectors. At least, that’s the name the media has given them. Their political name is the Syndicate. They are the ones who pray on the Innocent, who carry the Taint. If an Innocent meets an Infector, the Innocence is removed. That is how the Tainted are created; by them.

There is nothing more important than protecting the Innocents. They are the only ones who can, logically, procreate. They are literally the only hope of this world.

That’s why The Protection of Innocents Coalition exists.

We are an organized military group composed entirely of Tainted individuals who have dedicated the remainder of our lives to protecting the lives of Innocents.

Or at least, that’s what we were led to believe.

I’ve been a PIC operative for three years, ever since I was corrupted at the age of seventeen. I only have about 2 years left to live.

It’s hard to go on, knowing how little time I have and using it all trying to save other people.

But that’s why I have to do it.

Because no one else will.

There are so few left.

And we’re about to lose one more.
