Fire-flies

We stood behind the window

Admiring the bursting flame-flies

Exploiting the void of the Night Sky,

‘Like diamonds’ said Little Princess

Dressed in fairy clothes,

With fingers aimlessly twisting her spun hair.

I liked green best – enthused emeralds

Released from petty women’s throats and eyes

Instead to soar and never come down.

Little Princess loved red best – royal rubies

Creating a lady’s carpet to the Heavens.

He said he liked them all best.

We agreed that together they were more beautiful,

Crashing into one another to split into a

Myriad of magic splinters

Burning to die and dying to live.

Now children sleep

Yet still the jewels are free-

No man’s greed can force them down

Nor quench their jubilant shouts of joy

As they dizzyingly pirouette and

Escape
