I stared at myself in the mirror, trying hard not to laugh. I had been given a make over.
Sophie’s friends had come to find me after work and had dragged me away despite my protests.
Now here I am, an hour or two later, dressed up and looking like one of those skinny models on TV.
I was wearing short black shorts, I had protested their shortness but nobody listened, and a golden halter neck with a string of beads around my neck.
They had trimmed my hair slightly, not knowing it was a wig, and had applied make-up to my pale face. I had spent half and hour getting lessons on how to walk in high heels and been hassled into carrying a small golden purse.
The girl I was looking at in the mirror was not the miserable, pessimistic, supernatural being that I had been for my whole life, but a passably human woman who looked happy.
“Ooooooh! Come on, do you like it? Do you like it?!” Sophie and her friends, literally squealing, crowded in on me looking triumphant.
I gave a small smile “It’s great”, and was rewarded with shrieks of joy.
“Let’s go, let’s go! Matthew the sober driver and he told us to hurry up half an hour ago”
“Wait…Matthews coming?” I said, worried for an unknown reason.
“Yeah, of course… come on!”
I shook my head and followed the excited girls out. This was my night of fun, no need to ruin it wondering.
Sophie and her friends, dressed and ready, burst into the living room where Matthew was waiting, twirling his keys on his finger.
“Ready?” he asked, looking bored. As an answer the girls all rushed past him and out the door. Matthew gave an exasperated sigh, and then saw me.
“You…er…look great” he stuttered. His eyes roving up and down.
“Different, I know” giving him a sardonic smile “but I swear, with the amount of make up they have between them, they could make a monkey look like a model”
He chuckled. “Yeah probably” he held out his arm for me, “shall we go, milady.”
I grinned. “We shall.”
