Tinny the Horrible
Tinny lunged at Rex. “Must have gold,” He hissed, “I’ll be the richest man in all of StarHaven!” Rex dodged his furious claw swipes and kicks at amazing speeds. Tinny then attempted to tear Rex’s eyes out. Rex quickly reacted, and mule-kicked Tinny, sending him a few feet across the room. He wiped the blood from his mouth, “Impressive,” He murmured, “You’re just as fast as me! This is going to be fun!” Tinny started clawing at Rex again. Van Whiskers watched in amazement at how well Rex was dodging his partner’s blows. “This Rex kid is even better than we thought,” He said, “Someone else would’ve been torn to shreds by now. Master should we intervene and kill the boy?” “No Van Whiskers,” The voice hissed, “Tinny can handle himself, especially when it comes to money. We have two more shards in our possession, let’s go.” Van Whiskers nodded, and he teleported to his secret hideout.
Cora watched the battle go on. An hour passed, and Rex was starting to show signs of fatigue. Tinny was still clawing at Rex at an even greater speed. Tinny gave a mighty slash towards Rex’s chest. Rex dodged, narrowly, and his arm tore open. “Damn,” He howled, “That hurts a lot. I gotta be more careful…” Tinny licked the blood off his claws, “Just a few more slices to go, and you’ll be ribbons!” He lunged at Rex again, and this time got another successful hit…at his leg. Rex winced and collapsed to the floor, clenching his bleeding leg. Cora’s eyes widened, as Tinny continued attacking Rex. He got a successful hit at Rex’s cheek, shoulder, and eventually, his chest. Rex roared in pain, he was bleeding all over. “Now to finish the job,” Tinny said gleefully, “And get my delicious coins!” He was ready to give Rex the fatal blow when a massive wrench stopped the attack dead in its track. Rex looked up to see who it was. Tinny cocked an eyebrow, “Cora, what are you doing? I need to finish the fox boy!” Cora clenched her teeth, “Can’t you see you’ve already done enough to him? He’s badly wounded!”
“I don’t want to kill you!”
“Cora, let me through to him!”
“He’s my friend. So back off, or else!”
Tinny growled, “Cora…don’t do this…” Cora still held her ground. Tinny frowned and disappeared. Cora gasped and looked around in terror. She knew this move all to well. Her ears pricked and she turned around. There was nothing there except Rex, unconscious and clinging to life. Suddenly a sharp pain went through her stomach. Tinny’s claws impaled Cora and sent her flying to the ground, choking up blood. “I warned you didn’t I,” He sneered, “Now to finish this!” He went over to Rex and raised his claws in the air. He was ready to bring them down when he froze, stiff. Cora grinned, wielding the Spiker. “I always come prepared with a back-up…” She clenched her bleeding stomach and choked again. Tinny sniffed, “My money, it’s all gone up in smoke, I’m ruined!” Cora turned to the sound of opening doors. Jin and Kiara busted through the doors and found Rex, bleeding on the ground. Jin quickly put his head on his chest to check for a heartbeat. “He’s alive,” Jin muttered, “Just barely alive. Thank goodness, for a second there, I thought we would’ve lost our hero of StarHaven.” Kiara sighed in relief and checked up on Cora. She lightly touched the wound and it healed instantly. “That oughta do,” Kiara said, “Guess those medical magic lessons weren’t a waste after all.”
Tinny frowned, “Um, what’re you guys going to do with me?” The three looked at him and grinned mischievously. The sound of punches kicks, and gun blasts could be heard from inside the TECKNO building. Moments later, Tinny lied on the ground, battered and bruise, twitching senselessly. Cora stared at two of the security guards that had reached the facility. “Take him away,” Cora said sternly, “And bring Rex there to the infirmary, quick.” The two nodded. One took Tinny and the other took Rex. “The medical fairies should be able to patch him up.” Jin said calmly. A day passed, and Rex groaned in agony.
“He’s waking up!”
“Thank goodness.”
Rex frowned and opened his eyes to see Cora, Kiara and another person, who looked unfamiliar to him. “Hey,” Cora said cheerfully, “You alright?” Rex got up and looked down at himself, and jerked back in surprise. He looked as though he was not even wounded at all. “What happened,” Rex asked quickly, “How come I look as though I just came out of the hospital?” “You can thank the medical fairies for that,” The young man said, “I’m Jin, pleased to meet you.” Rex shook his hand, “Hey you’re a lot nicer than I thought!”
“How’re you expecting me to act?”
“Like an obnoxious, pompous asshole.”
Jin grinned weakly, “I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that.” The girls giggled. Kiara then jolted out of her giddy position. “Rex,” She whispered, “Where’s the Blazing soul?” Rex stiffened again. Kiara glared at him with gleaming eyes of rage. From outside the building, everyone heard, “WHAT?”, as Rex reluctantly told Kiara his story. “You idiot,” She hissed, “How could you let the Skull Gang get their hands on another Blazing Soul?” Cora grabbed Kiara by her wingtip to stop her from strangling Rex. “It’s not his fault,” Cora insisted, “Tinny was too fast for him to react.” Kiara calmed down and sighed, “Well, we can at least try to get the other nine fragments before Van Whiskers does.” Jin’s ears twitched as he noticed a conversation. “Apparently,” He started as he listened, “Captain Pearl has her hands on five more fragments of the Blazing Soul, while Zahra has the remaining four. “Well, where do we start?” Rex asked. “Captain Pearl is currently in boulder alley,” Jin said, “Which is closest to where we are. Zahra is at Skull Peak.”
“So I guess we should be heading off to get the fragments from Captain Pearl then.”
“That would be correct. We’re going to have to take the boat.”
A little later, Rex and the gang were ready to set sail. “So what’s Boulder Alley like?” Rex asked Cora. “It’s known for having boulders at virtually every corner,” She replied, “Luckily, this is the season where boulders are scarce on the island.”
“Good, I’d hate to be crushed under two tons of rock.”
Cora chuckled. “Hey you two,” Jin shouted from the mast, “Get moving, we have a lot of water to tread, and it’s a three day long trip!” The two nodded and went below deck. Jin looked ahead to the small tropical island and hopped from his position on the mast to the wheel. In a few moments, the boat set sail.
Meanwhile, at Boulder Alley, a black dog wearing pirates clothing looked through his telescope and spotted a small boat, quite a distance from here. He leaped from the palm tree and towards a small hut. Inside, two more henchmen were fanning someone who was eating chocolate bonbons. “Capt’n Pearl,” the henchman said, “I have spotted a boat, leaving Silver Town, on a course to our hideaway!” “First mate Carlos, how long ‘till they reach the island?” Pearl replied.
“Three days at the very least Capt’n.”
“Very well, get the traps ready, we’ll give them a greeting they won’t soon forget!”

Bonus: Character Development pt.2
The three characters introduced last chapter took quite some time to complete…
Cora: Pronounced like Sora, I originally intended for her to be a complete stranger to Rex and a know-it-all that would get on his nerves. I eventually decided to make her Rex’s long lost childhood friend, who was a little tom-boyish, but was always ready to protect those dear to her.
Jin: I actually intended him to be a bit like Van Whiskers, polite yet deadly. But in the end, I decided to make him cocky, a know-it-all and an experienced fighter (As you’ll see in later chapters).
Tinny the Horrible: I had a lot of fun developing this character. I wanted him to be a sleazy gambler who would constantly bet TECKNO’s entire savings. In the end I decided to make him greedy, a little crazy, and a bit reluctant to fight Cora…unless money is involved!
Next Chapter: The power of the tattoos
I am going to give you a sneak peek at how the tattoos on Rex’s arms work. ‘Till next chapter!
