Chapter 10: Two just too be sure.
“Well. What do you think it is Dante?” Violet asked sarcastically without taking her eyes off the bench where the test was sitting.
I still hadn’t moved or said anything.
“Is it a pregnancy test? Is it meant to be that colour? Jess, are you pregnant?”
I just looked at him with tears welling in my eyes.
Dante came over to hug me.
I had tear rolling down my cheeks as I buried my head in his shoulder.
“I think so” I whispered into his shoulder as I put my arms around his neck and continued to cry.
“What’s going on it there?” mum called from the hallway.
“Damn” Violet said practically diving for the test and hiding it behind her back just as mum walked in.
“I heard a glass smash.” She looked at the floor which was still covered in water and broken glass then to Dante, Violet and me.
“That was me. Sorry.” I said pulling away from Dante sniffing, “I’ll clean it up, I promise.”
Mum just nodded, said “Make sure you do” and walked out.
I knelt down and started picking up the glass.
I sliced my hand on one very large piece of glass so Dante gave me a face washer to hold to it and told me to sit down, then he started picking up bits of glass.
“That was close” Vi said handing me the test. I looked down at it and didn’t say anything.
“Don’t you think your mum thought that it was a little weird that Jess was crying into my shoulder and you were standing not far away with your hands behind your back looking guilty and a broken glass floor?” Dante said looking up as he put some ore glass in the bathroom bin.
“Don’t think so. Jess has been acting weird for about a month now.”
I looked back down at the test. How could I be so stupid?
“Hey Jess? Do you have another one of those?”
I snapped my head up to look at her. Dante whipped around to look at her too.
“What?” I said “Do you need one or something?”
All she did was look annoyed.
“No Jess. Because I unlike you haven’t had unprotected sex with anyone”
That hurt, that really hurt.
“Sorry Jess. What I wanted to say was: If you’ve got another one take it in about a week. Just too be sure. And if that one’s blue, well… we’ll have to tell mum.”
I groaned but nodded. I took the face washer away to look at my hand, and then quickly put it back on again.
“Damn it Jess. That’s gonna need stiches.”
I paled even more.
“Does that also involve needles?” I whimpered fearfully.
Dante shot a look at Vi who said “She has a phobia of needles and they make her feel sick after.”
And she left it at that.
Not to mention she left Dante to clean up the glass, my blood and the water.
I stuck the test into the bottom of the bin and sat on the edge of the bath trying not to faint.
“Squeeze my hand if you want to Jess. Dad will try to make sure it doesn’t hurt, won’t you dad?” Dante offered me his hand.
I took it and held onto it like it was a life line.
We were in the local hospital emergency room.
“Don’t worry Jess. It shouldn’t hurt once I’ve injected an anaesthetic into it.”
I paled and turned my head away from my injured right hand and the needles.
“Just look at me Jess. Focus on me. Don’t look at anything but me ok? Focus on me.” Dante whispered to me as I drew a breath in sharply as I felt the needle go in.
Dante squeezed my hand and kept whispering to me.
“Is it numb now Jess?” Mr Peaks asked or should I say Dr Peaks? I never knew he was a doctor.
“If Jess’s isn’t mine is.” Dante said trying to pry his hand loose.
I let his hand go and Dante started moving his hand to get some feeling back into it.
“Sorry” I murmured then whimpered as Mr Peaks put the first stitch in.
“Won’t be long now love” Dante whispered in my ear.
He held out his hand and I took it. This time I wasn’t going to cut the circulation to his hand off.
I smiled weakly at him as Mr Peaks tied off the last stitch.
“There you go Jess. Done”
I sat up slowly and smiled weakly at Mr Peaks.
“Good.” Said Vi stepping back “now she’s going to be sick. Someone get her a bucket or something.”
They got a bucket to me just as I threw up.
“Sorry” I groaned lying back down again.
“No harm done.” Mr Peaks said “now, because it was a clean cut you won’t need a tetanus shot so I hope that makes you feel a bit better.”
He turned to Dante and said “you’ll need to bring her back in, in about a month to get those stitches out. I also want to talk to you about…”
They moved away so that I couldn’t hear, not that I was fit to, seeing as I was throwing my guts up again.
Violet came over and started rubbing my back.
Your hand hurt?
HELL YES
You throwing up because of the needles or the baby?
Vi. We don’t even know IF there’s a baby. And like I could tell anyway.
Mr Peaks and Dante walked back over to us.
Dante didn’t look to happy.
“How you feeling?” Dante said kissing me on the forehead. “Do you think you can have a blood test? Or do you still feel crap?”
I looked at him in horror “more needles? Why? What do I need a blood test for?”
I looked at Mr Peaks who smiled weakly at me. Then I looked at Dante and Vi and whimpered.
“If I need it, I’ll have it.” Dante sighed and nodded to his dad who went to the door and asked the nurse who was walking passed to get him what he needed.
“Why do I need this blood test? You said that it was a clean cut and that I didn’t need a tetanus shot.”
The nurse brought in the needles and stuff that Mr Peaks needed.
I closed my eyes and kept them closed while I felt Mr Peaks put that band thingy on my upper arm.
Then he started wiping my arm with those alcohol wipe things.
Dante held my hand as Mr Peaks put the needle in and started to draw my blood.
“Why needles?” I moaned as I waited for Mr Peaks to remove the needle.
“Ok Jess. Done. Just lay there for a bit ok? And when she’s ready, Dante can you take her straight home. No side trips ok.”
Then he walked out to go do what ever it was that doctors do with your blood after they take it.
“You were very brave Jess. After I get you home I’ll make you the best lunch you’ve ever had. If you’re up to it of course.”
I sat up slowly and opened my eyes.
“Can I go home now? I just want to go home and sleep if that’s alright with everyone.”
Dante slipped his arm around my waist then he pulled my left hand around his neck, seeing as how my right hand was still numb.
Then he helped me out through the waiting room where people stared at Dante and me walking with our arms around each other and me leaning most of my weight on Dante.
“Not to good with needles” Vi explained walking behind us.
Dante walked me out of the hospital and to his car then he took us all home.
When I got home I went straight to bed and slept for the next sixteen hours.
“Sorry to bother you Mrs. Wainewright” I heard Dante’s dad say from the hallway a week after I had cut my hand.
“I just really need to speak with Dante. It’s kind of important.”
I heard mum agree and looked at Dante who was sitting with me on my bed looking at my right hand.
Violet and Alex looked up at Dante from where they were laying together on my floor paying our playstation.
There was a knock on my door and Dante’s dad walked in after poking his head around the door to see if Dante was in here.
“I’ve got the results for that blood test I did the other day.”
Dante looked up from my hand.
“Well? What does it say?”
Mr Peaks handed Dante a folded piece of paper.
Dante looked at it then handed it to me.
The paper read:
The Blood test we ran on a Miss Jessica
Ann Wainewright’s blood has confirmed
What you believed. The test was positive.
Miss Wainewright is indeed pregnant.
Yours sincerely,
Pathology Department.
I looked up from the paper shocked.
Well what had I expected? For it to say that I’m not an idiot?
“What? Jess, what is it?”
I handed the paper to Vi who read and handed it to Alex.
Alex’s eyes almost popped out of his head.
“When was I going to be told about this? If I’m going to be an uncle I might as well know.”
He handed the sheet of paper back to me.
I sat there stunned then I looked at Dante and burst into tears.
Alex and Mr Peaks looked surprised and Violet explained that “she’s been doing that a lot lately.”
Just then mum came into my room.
“I’ve got lemonade if any of… Jess what’s wrong?”
I didn’t answer I just kept crying. I handed her the paper.
Vi jumped up and demanded “What are you crazy Jess? Do you really want mum to see that? Mum I don’t think you should read that.”
“She might as well” I sobbed “what does it matter if she sees it?”
Mum looked at the doom notice.
“Oh boy.” She said sitting down on the end of my bed.
“Oh boy, Oh boy. Jess is this true? Are you pregnant?”
I rubbed at my eyes.
“That’s what the test said” I said this through stiff lips. “I’m sorry”
Dante put his arms around me and I leaned into him.
“When did you get the test done?”
Mr Peaks answered mum.
“Dante spoke to me when Jess came in to get her hand stitched. He said that the reason she had cut her hand in the first place was because she dropped a glass after seeing the result of a chemist pregnancy test. She was picking up the broken glass after she showed Dante and Violet the test. Dante wanted to be sure so he asked me to do a blood test. Jess said she would have it, though she didn’t know what the test was for at the time.”
Mum just looked at him and said “I see” then came over to hug me.

Author’s note: So sorry that this is a really long chapter. And I didn’t know how a really note from Pathology would go so I made it up. I don’t know if you’ve read all of our profile but I really wanted to know if I should change Jess’s tattoo that’s on her stomach to her left shoulder or not.
