What I Know: Of Love

I’ll tell you what I know of love
if you’ll take the time to hear.
it isn’t what you wanted though
so don’t complain
if you shed a tear:

love isn’t what you’ve heard or seen
in movies, shows
or hit pop songs.
love doesn’t make
the sky bluer,
life sweeter,
or bad days better.
food
still tastes like food,
and shit
still tastes like shit.
work won’t speed up,
zipping by
in honor of you and your other;
if anything,
it slows
to a painful, boring lull.
crushes do still happen
when you’re happy;
and when you’re not.
and death still stings
in the very same way,
as it would if you were alone.

so, in the end
maybe all I know
is all the things love’s not.
