Sunshine.

City lights could not

drown out your sunshine

and the sparkles you placed in the sky

day after day,

and night after night.

-:- -:- -:-

But there was a time, when

the nights were dim and heavy.

It always seemed to tilt the world

into depression until morning.

-:- -:- -:-

The world waited, until

You’d awaken from golden slumbers

For when you rose from bed

at the crack of dawn,

the horizon seemed to blush

from your gaze through the window.

And everything would be all right.

-:- -:- -:-

And every day,

your sunshine in my eyes

would make everything beautiful.

-:- -:- -:-

I remember in our childhood,

when we were saying our goodbyes,

you, Sunshine, made me a promise.

(You in your blue jeans

and I in my pink ribbons and shoes.)

You swore you’d keep the sun shining

for me in the morning,

and keep the sparkles in the sky

for me while I slept.

-:- -:- -:-

Sunshine,

I still wait for the light in the morning

before I go to school.

Sunshine,

I still count the sparkles in the sky

before I go to bed.

-:- -:- -:-

And from my fourth-floor city apartment, Sunshine,

everything still looks beautiful.
