Where Heroes Fall and Die

I am the sands of time dragging beneath their feet,

And the monster that shows them their ways.

I watch them stumble blindly forward, swords in hand.

I am the place where heroes fall and die.

-

I am the small voice in their head that whispers, “You’re going to die”

They know me well and listen, blind to other judgments.

Some shout “Be gone demon, I shall slay my foe!”

But something, I know, they cannot control.

-

Achilles fell in love then lost to his weak heel.

Hercules became a mortal and died of a mortal’s old age.

Soldiers in Vietnam fought a senseless battle,

And I was there to watch them all shatter.

-

I am the warrior they meet in the battlefield and

The Minotaur that blocks them from their path.

I am the snake that slithers in their corridors

And the rat that hides among their men.

-

I am the sands of time dragging beneath their feet

Leading them to the place where heroes fall and die.

Authors Note:

When I read the first stanza, I couldn't get this image or voice (below) from my mind:

A dark world, near dusk with little light, nearly grey in color with many many clouds. Strong winds kicking up dust and sand from the desert below. Large jagged rocks protruding from the sand like daggers and a low masculine voice slowly reading the first stanza.

Did anyone else see that? Hear it just like that? I sure did!!!

To me, I was expecting to find a remote in my hand or a game controller. I wanted to press rewind on the intro and watch it all over again. It was just... I have no words to describe it.

Again please, PLEASE review! I want to know what you think, and don't just give me the "oh, it's nice" or "OMG I LOVE IT PLEASE PLEASE WRITE MORE" or something. I want to know what you liked about it, what you didn't like about it.

Hell, dissect it all you want, as if you were in an English class. I just want to more than "I LOVE IT."
