Chapter 9: Getting To Know Me, Again
“I can’t believe this!” I claimed.
Marie took me by the arm, out of the room; far enough Jason couldn’t hear us.
“I don’t think anyone expected this Erin. It’s not your fault, so don’t take it so harshly, for all we know this is just a temporary setback,” Marie encouraged.
“Yes, but for all we know he could have lost his memory of us meeting permanently. What if it never returns?”
“Now, now, don’t be so negative. Look at the positive side, even if he has lost memory of you from the past, you can create new ones.”
“Guess I can always hope…”
“Yes, now you get back in there and help that boyfriend of yours!”
Slowly I walked back into the room, knowing my presence wasn’t exactly welcomed at the present time. Doctors swarmed everywhere in the room, their voices buzzing frantically at Jason. I couldn’t help but pity Jason, I’m sure the last thing he wanted right now was to be questioned on everything he had once known. Now that Jason hadn’t remembered who I was I highly doubted the doctors believed the fact I was his girlfriend.
“Come back another time!” I heard my doctor yell at me as she pushed her way past all the other doctors.
Ignoring her suggestion, I also pushed my way through, no matter how disrespectful it might be. Sure these doctors had more authority than I had, but I’m sure Jason would’ve appreciated a moment away from all the questions these doctors were bombarding him with.
“Hey!”
“…Come back later.”
“Well that was rude…”
“This is not the time!”
“…back to your room Erin.”
The suggestions of the doctors were spitting out like bees by a rosebush. Only few had I heard, I didn’t really care what they said honestly.
“Hey, Jason!” I called, nearing him.
“Hello?” he mumbled, pushing away doctors faces to get to mine.
“I’m sorry for confusing you when I’d known your name and you hadn’t known mine. My name is Erin, I’m a new student at your high school, and we first met a day after school started.”
“Hi, Erin, nice to meet you.”
“Excuse me, sorry? Could you repeat that?” I asked loudly, trying to be heard over the angry doctors.
“What?”
“That’s it! I’ve had it!” I shrieked above the doctors non-stop mumble, “I don’t care if your doctors or not but Jason needs his space so GET LOST!”
“Who do you think you are to have authority over me?” I heard somewhere in the midst of the doctors.
I could feel the blood boil in my face. Respect was something I should’ve considered before confronting them all but it wasn’t my concern at this moment. I shouldn’t have to scream to be heard by my boyfriend.
“It doesn’t even matter! I need to talk to him and with everyone crowded in here I can’t be heard! Now get out before I GO CRAZY!”
Everything went silent for the first time in this crowded room, I heard a scuffle of feet as some doctors jammed their way out of the room. One by one the doctors left, obviously too frustrated to even convince me to leave. As the last doctor was about to leave he turned around towards me, almost testing my patience. He was unfamiliar, and very blonde. His face was stern and upset, like he was ready to do anything to stay in the room. The name tag on his chest read Dr. R. Grey, which seemed somewhat familiar, but I couldn’t remember from where.
“Just so you know I don’t approve of this…” he announced.
“GET…OUT!” I panted, interrupting his lecture.
He dashed away without another word. Breathing in, I turned towards Jason whose eyes were focussed on me. I could see the expression of awe in his eyes, which seemed slightly cold at the time.
Sitting down in a chair near the bed, I rested my elbows on the mattress. Looking at him, I became lost in his eyes, and I knew we were finally alone.
“So how much do you know about me anyways?” he asked, breaking the calm silence.
“You’re psychic, and so is your dad. I remember you two ganging up on me in the Porsche when we drove to the airport like the palm of my hand. You can read my mind, and my fathers, because you said all the right things when you came to my house. At our high school you’re quite popular, people felt badly for you since you were partnered up with the new girl for a project…” I began.
“Well it seems you know quite a deal about me then don’t you, enough for me to trust you.”
“I know as much as I can only having known you in a short amount of time.”
Only now had I realized we’d known each other as little as we did. It appeared as if we’d gone into the relationship too fast, and due to that we’d gone off to my old home town, causing his amnesia. Technically, it wasn’t my fault, but maybe it would’ve been smarter to have known each other better before we dated.
“So where are we?” he interrupted my thoughts.
“You are in a hospital in New York, because my ex has decided to use my friend Marie against me. We came to protect her, but I’m thinking we may have some problems with that,” I answered.
“How so?”
“Well, you don’t remember me, so I’m thinking you wouldn’t remember Marie.”
“Yeah, I have no idea who that is.”
“But I don’t want you to worry about this being a problem, that’s the last thing I want. I want this process to be as easy for you as possible.”
“Wow, why do you care so much?”
“Um…”
Should I tell him I was his girlfriend? I didn’t want him to feel too pressured to know me as fast as possible. If I told him I’d feel like a burden, and I didn’t want that. I’m sure he wouldn’t like it either, he might get stressed. Although he could find it frustrating, he should be aware of where we’d left off before the crash. So it was then I reached my decision:
“I didn’t want to tell you before, I was worried about your reaction, but…I’m your girlfriend.”
