Chapter Six: It Ain’t Always Funny When It Happens To You
(Fuck this, let’s get Naked)
My to-do list:
Get laid
Find a good guy
Relax!
Kill Anthony
I stared at my list and shook my head. I tried to kill Anthony everyday and yet, he was still here, alive and pissing me off every second he could. My eyes wandered to my first priority; getting laid. But, knowing my luck either a)that wasn’t going to be happening any time soon, b)I’m too much of a commitment type of person for a one night stand or c)I’m just unlucky. I signed and nibbled on my pen cap and tapped my other hand against the cool table.
So I glanced a the second item on the list. Maybe I ought to switch things around. As much as I wanted to date someone, I wasn’t sure if I was really ready just yet to date someone. I considered all guys just like Dustin and they weren’t good for anything, other than for getting laid and sometimes that even stank. I crossed that out. I looked at the third item on the list. Relax? I don’t know the meaning of that actually. Hmmm… what a more perfect time than to check out a spa or two then this weekend.
“Indies?” a soft voice from behind me ask. I glanced over my shoulder and had to squint and shield my eyes from the blazing sun. I recognized the woman but I couldn’t remember her name. She used to be my old co-workerand my interest peaked.
“Yeah?” I asked, watching her intently as she drew up a chair and seated herself at my table. She grinned widely and set her purse on the top.
“Oh, wow! It may have only been a couple of weeks but already you look different!” she gushed.
‘Liar,’ I thought, licking my lips but waiting for her to continue. She did continue, her lips moving but I couldn’t really hear what she was saying up to this point.
“Well, Mr. Collins said you could come back if you’d like. We don’t like the new person we hired so we were wondering if you’d like your old job back.” she said happily, that sly, fox-like grin on her lips.
‘Ah, so they want me to come crawling back.. Well, no matter. I won’t go back.’ I thought, slyly grinning as well.
“No thank you, I enjoy working for Mr. Marcus.” I said , shrugging my shoulders and folding my hands together. Her jaw dropped slightly and I could see her working to form something to say.
“The Mr. Marcus?” she gasped, raising her hand to her mouth. I nodded and secretly enjoyed my victory. I used to be married to my old job, well, now I’m not and that made me feel like standing up and shouting at the top of my lungs.
“Yes, that Mr. Marcus. I enjoy the work, and I even more enjoy having the weekends off.”
“Oh, I’m sure Mr. Collins can pitch you a better deal.”
“Oh, I’m sure he can, but I’m not going back. No matter how much money he’s willing to pay. I’m not going back.”
“Why not? You’re excellent!”
“I know, but I’m not going back. Period. Nothing’s going to make me change my mind.”
“Not even having more bonuses, a pay raise, a paid vacation?”
“No, nothing of that will change my mind. After seeing how you guys treated someone like me, I decided I’m not going back to that.” I said, pushing my chair back and standing up. She gaped at me again and I shrugged my shoulders.
“Sorry, I’m not going back.” I repeated, turning on my heels and getting to walk off.
“You’ll regret not coming back!” she shrieked, and I winced from the sound of her voice. I really didn’t care.
“Like I give a shit.” I retorted, glancing over my shoulder and continued walking. I heard her shriek something else but I ignored it. I wasn’t going back to her, to that, to anything that concerned them.
I felt my phone start buzzing in my pocket, so I dug around for a moment before glancing at the screen. I raised an eyebrow, then remembered I have given Garret my number a while back. I flipped it open.
“Hello?”
“Oh, hi Indies.”
“Did ya need something?” I asked, concerned now.
“Oh, no.. it’s nothing but I was wondering if you were busy tonight.”
“Uh, no I’m not. Why?” I asked, curious.
“Oh, no reason.” he replied back, keeping me in suspense. I groaned and shook my head, rolling my eyes at the phone.
“Well, I was curious because I was wondering if you’d like to have dinner with me.” he finally spit out. I stopped and giggled suddenly. It felt like I was back in the tenth grade and being asked out for the first time.
“Oh, well, maybe.” I grinned even wider. “Give me a bit to think about it.”
“How long will that be?” he asked, his voice low. I chuckled at his impatience.
“Oh, maybe a couple hours? Or just call me back around five tonight.” I suggested, shrugging to no one.
“Cool,” he replied. “I, uh, have to go now. But I’ll call you later.”
“Ok, talk to you later then. Bye.” I shut my phone and the giggled again. I glanced around me, more than likely looking really suspicious, then I shrieked quietly, stamping my feet like a little kid would. Then I stopped and smoothed out my clothes.
“I’ll just go shopping for tonight then,” I told myself, still smiling widely. I dug for my phone again and speed dialed Anthony. He’d want to know the news and hell, he was the guy I took shopping. I wasn’t good at shopping and knowing my luck, I’d probably buy the most ugliest, hideous, disastrous pieces of clothing.
“Hey you, wanna go shopping with me?” I asked the second he answered his phone.
“Hell yeah! Are you coming to get me or are we walking?” he asked. I thought for a moment before replying,
“I’ll stop by and pick you up. Hell, let’s go to an expensive store, too. I feel like getting the best today.”
“Oh, yeah! Baby girl’s got a plan!” he chuckled and hung up. I laughed and shook my head as I put my phone back away.
oOoOoOoOo
Garret glanced at the phone. Earlier he had been cussing and bashing himself for even thinking about liking Indies and then suddenly, there he was, asking her out on a date. He tossed his phone onto his bed and glanced at the clock. Only two hours before she suggested he call her again. He shook his head, amazed with himself with having the balls to do something like that.
Especially after Sabella. He let out a long breath. Sabella was his whole world for so long and he still felt the hole there when thinking about her. He shook his head but it wouldn’t do any good. Sabella had been a good three, almost four years younger than him. He was just a few days into being a Senior and was already pretty much the top dog of the school. But after a couple weeks and she moved there, he wanted her so badly. She was the cute, smart little freshman.
The first words she spoke to him made him fall in love instantly. He would skip some football practices just to spend more time with her, stay up late and would avoid all of his other friends. His parents weren’t too keen on that idea of him being around such a young girl but they never stopped him. And back then, he probably would’ve told his parents to go to hell and would’ve moved out after that. That girl had him wrapped around her finger and everyone but him knew it.
After he graduated, he made sure that he could do everything for her and hopped that he could marry her as well. He waited for those three long years until she graduated and everything seemed to be perfect by then. At that time she had just found out she was three months pregnant and he was always asking to marry her. But, instead of her accepting his proposal, she rejected him. She wound up leaving him one night, when he was dead asleep and the note she left behind really hurt him.
He shook his head, trying to get the past out of his mind. Tonight wasn’t going to be spent on remembering what happened or what could’ve happened. Tonight was going to be about him and Indies. He stretched his arms above his head and yawned. Maybe he could slowly get to know her, instead of being caught red handed in the office again. He chuckled at the thought.
He looked at himself in the full length mirror and smirked. Tonight was going to be the best, even if he had to die trying.
