I would write you love letters,
one every day for a year
if I had the courage to write the words
that you wouldn’t want to hear.

I would sing your favorite song
under your window as loud as I can
if I had the courage to take this chance—
in my dreams I saw that you only ran.

I would paint you beautiful
rendering you an immortal angel
if I had the courage to brave the art
and let your image have my spirit to sell.

I would breathe the same air as you
like a lover sharing one moment, one soul
if I had the courage to come closer
and let this hard love take its toll.

If you asked it of me
I would let this raging, jealous sea
peel away my skin and let each bone
sink to the dark floor like a stone.
