The main idea of this poem was to write a free verse around an extended metaphor. The one I chose was how depression and drowning are the same... I hope you enjoy!...
The day you wake
to discover the absence
of light seems to be
the end,
but you refuse to give up.
Though the waves crash
around you and
the storm pushes you down,
you continue to swim,
ignoring the burning
in your lungs
and the pain in your legs.
Salt water stings your eyes
and your open wounds,
fills your mouth
and chokes your screams.
You can do nothing
but flail your limbs
and pray that someone will notice.
Survival seems impossible.
It would be much easier
if you just give up.
But somewhere in the dark
a voice calls your name,
a hand grips your wrist
and pulls you from the depths.
Light floods your vision
and suddenly you’re on the shore,
gazing back at
the dark and ominous ocean
which almost took your life.
