Snake Eyes
Chapter 3
The first thing Adam thought when he awoke was his traditional thought: Just ten more minutes...
The second thing Adam thought when he awoke was, Wait, when did I get to bed...? And why are the pillows red and fluffy and not white and thin?
With a sudden burst of vigor Adam pushed himself up and stared. His bed was about double the size of the one he remembered, accented by a lovely and soft cream blanket. Not to mention his pillows had multiplied and turned crimson. Last night...
Last night...
"I can get you a mansion."
Adam threw the covers to his side, jumping out of bed with a start. He looked around the room. It was spacious, and expertly decorated, nothing like the room he'd had before.
He brought a hand to his face, feeling queasy suddenly. That just proves it then...there really is a demon in my attic...
"Enjoying it?"
"Hwaah!!" Adam jumped, falling back on his bed when Epoh's face appeared just inches away from his. She sneered, retracting her neck back to her spider body. "Surprise!"
"Y... You are real." Adam deadpanned.
"Oh, really? What clued you in?" she asked mockingly. "Hey, why don't you go check out the rest of your new house." It wasn't a question.
Saying nothing, Adam opened the door to his room. His breath caught in his throat for a few moments before he dared to slowly walk through the rest of his house...his mansion. Like his room, it was huge and decorated with a designer's touch...it left him in awe. Epoh was grinning devilishly behind him. "So, like it?" she inquired.
"It's...I can't believe..." Adam breathed.
"Well, Joy left for work or volunteering or making world peace; like a care about that goodie two-shoes...that leaves you, me, Fate, and Luck," Epoh said.
"No...I...I couldn't..." Adam said softly.
Epoh threw her head back in a booming cackle. "That was a pretty weak defense, don't you think, human? You know you want that rush of the gamble back! And just think of the rewards." Epoh gestured at the entire splendid room.
Adam hesitated. "I..."
"Hey, y'know what you'd like?" Epoh grinned. "To get a new boss."
"You aren't killing my boss!" Adam said with a fiery tone.
"Who said anything about killing?" Epoh said defensively, but smiling all the same. "I was just pointing it out, dimwit."
Adam's shoulders relaxed. "Oh..."
"Heh, silly humans and your notions of morals. You don't even like the guy," Epoh muttered, more to herself than Adam. "But how does this sound? Get that trusty snake eyes, and get yourself a nice new boss. Don't, and old boss has six months of male PMS."
That's a bit more of a gain than loss... Adam weighed in his mind. He sighed. "I must be crazy for doing this...but my boss is seriously an ass."
Smirking, Epoh offered him Fate and Luck, and he took them. He began shaking them in his palms, and threw them recklessly.
Two. Six.
Damn, Adam thought. He felt his heart pulse, and realized Epoh was right. This gambling gave him such a rush. Adam hurriedly picked up the dice and rolled them in his hands. He let them fly from his hands, hitting the back wall.
One. One.
"Lucky!" Epoh commented. "Didn't even need the third chance! Well then, I'm on it!"
And with that, she was gone.
Workers glanced up at their boss, whose face was utterly crestfallen, his eyes blinking frequently, shoulders sagged. "I've been at this company for years, but apparently the higher ups don't give a...long story short, I've been fired, and someone new is taking my spot."
Collective gasping. Adam fought a cruel grin. I've gotta talk to Epoh later and talk about traffic, Fate, and Luck...heh heh...
"Good-bye," Mr. Damison said simply, slowly walking down the corridor to the exit as if savoring his last few moments.
David Damison looked regarded his wife with a sad frown. His eyes traveled down to her bulging stomach. "I have to find a new job..."
"What?!" she exclaimed. "You've worked at that company for years! And what will we do...about this one?" She held her stomach, her unborn baby boy.
"We'll need income to support our new family member...but I need to find a job fast, or we'll run out of savings..." David deadpanned.
Epoh smirked. "Then I can expect you to gamble some more after dinner?"
He nodded enthusiastically. "Yes."
"Honey! Rump roast!"
"Ah! Speak of the devil!" Adam turned. "Coming, Joy!" And with that, he was out of the attic, his footsteps echoing off of the stairs.
Epoh started to laugh. Softly, at first, steadily rising like a crescendo, clenching her eyes shut. When she opened them, she stared at her surroundings of fire.
"Epoh!"
She recognized that voice. "Ah, Ecilam."
The demon, a ghastly beast that vaguely resembled a boar turned inside-out, hurried over to her. "So, how fucked up is the human's life now?" he asked with malicious glee, red eyes sparkling.
"Ah, Ecilam, you have a one-track mind," Epoh remarked. "Though, I would have it no other way, little one. His boss Damison will look unsuccessfully for a job for three months, then kill himself so the insurance money can help his wife and son. But in the rage of mourning his wife will be caught trying to kill her son with a pillow, crying the whole time, 'It's your fault! It's your fault!' And the son will grow up as a delinquet in an orphanage, never knowing of his parents. He'll commit suicide by age fifteen.
"As for Adam himself," Epoh continued, "well, you'll just have to wait and see."
The younger demon groaned. "Ugh, why are you always so secretive!?" he whined.
Epoh smiled, a malevolent glint in her eye. "Patience, little one..."
