After the Holidays

“Work hard.” His father said formally.

Tobias nodded. His mother stepped forward and kissed him.

“We’re very proud of you.” She smiled. “And it’s been wonderful to see you again.”

“Yes, it has.” He returned her kiss, wishing miserably that he hadn’t had to lie.

---

Cambridge towered above him; the churches and colleges, the shops and houses. King’s college chapel dominated the skyline. He was back.

He was home. Home was where the heart was and Tobias knew that if his heart was anywhere it was here, flying round the chapel, peeking in at the stained glass windows, sliding over the benches in the lecture theatres.

He felt somehow more relaxed here. Despite the work and the worry and the money (or lack of) Cambridge was somehow less…tense than his parents house.

It was home.

---

He returned to the sound of Paul’s flute floating through the window, amidst the crashes of Kit trying to manoeuvre his luggage up the stairs.

“Did, did you have a good holiday?” Tobias asked cautiously, wincing as a particularly large thump dislodged a section of plaster from the landing.

“Great.” Kit grinned, “It is nice going home and getting spoilt properly again. Do you need a hand with your bags?”

Tobias looked down at the small canvass case he was clutching. “I-I’m fine, thanks.”

I’ve missed Tobias D I’ve also had a lecture on science at the time he was alive, so hopefully these should be slightly more accurate now, rather than shockingly anachronistic.
