Intoxicating
“This is so not the way I thought that I would be spending my last summer before going off to college.” I grumbled darkly as I tied my apron around my waist.
Not the way I thought it would be at all.
Working for, fricking, minimum wage, driving an ice cream truck around from 10 in the morning till 4 in the afternoon, and having to serve all those little demons called children. Was not how I planned to spend the summer; damn college tuition.
I glared darkly into the mirror that was hung in the employee dressing room as if it had done me a great personal harm, “Damn pastel uniform.”
This whole thing was enough to make me vomit. Taking my long dark hair, I threw it up into a pony tail…just as the company told me I must do, I took my lovely name pin and fastened it to my hideous yellow shirt…just as the company told me I must do, and then to top it all of, I put on a cheerful smile… just as the company told me I must do.
“Hello, and what may I get you on this fine chippery wonderfully perfect morning.”
Yeah, I was going to make myself vomit, after working in this hell hole for two weeks, you’d think I’d have gotten use to it all.
With one last look in the mirror I grabbed my trusty keys and made my way to the truck.
That damn truck and its damn song that played over and over and over again. If it just died and never started up again, I would seriously have no issue…none what so ever.
I stepped into my own personal hell, and started up the engine.
“Maeve, don’t forget your ‘Terrific Ice Cream Treats’ smile!”
With a roll of my eyes I turned and gave Gabe, my wonderful employer, my most charming smile I could muster…and hoped that it didn’t come off as the crazed I-want-to-inflict-bodily-harm-on-you way.
Which I did, want to do…very badly, in fact.
“I never go anywhere with out it…Gabe.” My overly perky smile faded into a scowl when he turned his back…and I may have thrown in a rude hand jester. “What a fucking perfect way to start off the day,” and so I began on my lovely route…going a grand total of 10 miles per hour.
I am queen of the road! Here me roar!
Taking my headphones out, I shoved them roughly into my ears, hoping to drown out that song that caused all the little children to coming running after my hot rod of a truck. With a flick of a switch on my Ipod, sweet loud music filled my ears.
Oh my sanity is slightly restored.
Why the hell did I take this job? I’m not very fond of ice cream, I detest little children, my people skills are not exactly the best out there, and absolutely hate this monstrosity of a vehicle.
Okay first neighborhood of the day, come to me all you children...Momma needs money to pay for college.
I rang my charming come-hither-I-have-ice-cream bell, and waited as I slowly drove down the streets…looking around to see if I was going to make a sale anytime soon.
Oh, and sure enough, a door opens and a charming little blonde girl comes out trying to flag me down.
With a heavy sigh, I slowed my truck to a stop, flipped my Ipod off and pulled my headphones out. My smile was firmly in place and I made my way to the back to take her order.
“Hi there sweetie, what can I get you today?”
She looked up at me with her dark eyes but said nothing.
“Brig, I thought I said to wait a moment and I’d come out with you,” I looked up at the sound of the deep voice, only to find a guy making his way over to the little girl. With difficulty I didn’t tap my foot, but waited as he approached, with my cheerful smile still in place.
“Hello there, what can I get you all today?” Smiling I looked form the little girl to the guy who was now holding her.
“Sebby, she’s pretty,” the little girl whispered to the guy with out taking her dark eyes off of me.
Yep…I was growing uncomfortable. Why couldn’t they just order so I could go on my merry way? Laughing slightly at the little child, I shook my head, “Thank you…but let’s get back to the business of ice cream. What’ll it be?”
With a clap of my hands, I looked at both of them…I’m still smiling.
“You’re right Brig, but I think you need to put a ‘really’ in front of the pretty.” The guy laughed and my eyes narrowed. It was way too early in the morning to be dealing with this...but I am still smiling, it maybe a slightly demented smile, yet it is a smile none the less.
“Look, can I please just take your order so that I may be on my merry way?” So my normal bright self was starting to show through, only to my horror…and I do mean horror…the guy only smirked at me, his dark eyes glinting mischievously. This was not going to be my day. Well come to think about it, it was never my day, but today was defiantly not my day.
“You seem to be in such a hurry to leave,” his eyes lingered to my chest where my name tag was, and they stayed there for a moment longer then was necessary, “Maeve. Pretty name, and would you know what it means.” Large dark eyes met my blue ones, as a smug smirk pulled at his lips.
“Intoxicating, now will you please order?”
My smile was now gone…
I was very close to punching this guy.
“Can I have the rainbow Popsicle?” The little girl spoke from the guy’s arms; she looked at me with one of those semi-toothless smiles, that seem to be very prominent among kids from about 5 to 10, and yet against all odds, she made me give her a real smile…scary I know.
“Sure you can,” I dug around and pulled one out, it’s multi-colored wrapper crinkling as I handed it over to her.
“Thank you!” She gave me another one of her semi-toothless smiles, as the guy set her back down on the ground, and she shot off, running back inside of her house.
“That will be 1.5…”
“Hey, I haven’t ordered yet,” this guy was seriously on the verge of getting a Popsicle in his ear.
“And what do you want?”
I’m so over this. Now, I’m going to have to wait as he looks over everything that we offer. My eyes rolled, I swear it’s like, an involuntary action now. The guy’s eyes swept over his selection, shoving his hands into the pockets of his shorts his eyes met mine. “What I want isn’t exactly on the menu.” His smirk was larger then it was before, and I sadly enough let my temper get the better of me.
That’s right.
I got out of the truck.
Completely against company policy, but I could care less.
This guy was on my last nerve.
“Look buster, I’m just trying to do my job to help pay for my fucking college tuition, so either you pick something on the menu, or I will shove a nutty fudge bar up your ass. Do you understand me?” I had gotten right up into his personal bubble, and had jabbed my finger into his chest…
He laughed at my threat, he does have a fairly descent nice laugh.
Ew, no what am I say…he’s an annoying man…and taller than I had expected.
I look up at the guy who I had just threatened, and he looked down at me…his dark hair falling into his eyes, “The name is Seb, and I was talking about those old Coco Nacos that were once sold.”
“Oh,” color rose to my cheeks, and the back of my neck grew hot. Damn my temper to hell. And damn my mind for thinking that he wanted me, “I’ll just get back into my personal hell, and drive away now.” I made my way quickly back to the truck, that is until Seb grabbed my hand.
“I haven’t paid.” His hand was hot against my cool one, damn cute men, damn them all to hell.
“It’s on the house,” I tugged my hand free of his and got into the drivers seat and went to start up the truck.
It wouldn’t start up.
Why? Why does god seem to hate me?
I banged my head on the steering wheel.
“I give up,” my head on the steering wheel I looked over at Seb, “the truck died, they had to give the new girl the worse truck in the lot, and now it’s dead. I give up. I’m done. No more…and no more ice cream!”
What did he do?
Gave me an irresistible smile. That’s right, I’ll admit it, he’s damn attractive, well, I mean, he would be if he didn’t seem to rub me the wrong way.
Annoy git.
“Get out of there, and pop the hood.” What made him think that he was the boss of me?
“You’re not the boss of me,” I hit my head on the steering wheel again. Wow, real mature of me…after I heard his laughter I popped the hood and got out to go stand by him. He looked around, and pulled out some cable or another, and started telling me something that I couldn’t comprehend.
“Look, Maeve, give me a minute, I’ll go change and bring my tool kit out, then we can fix your beloved truck.” Seb gave me a good nature wink, before heading up the walk way.
“You aren’t going to try and kill me or send a bunch of little children to attack or anything…are you?”
Seb let out a small chuckle and shaking his head, he entered his house.
Well, this was not expected.
I took my hair out of its annoying hold, and laid down on the grass and closed my eyes, letting my thoughts take over.
He’s kinda, really cute.
I’ve seen better
Maybe, but still, that guy is kinda really gorgeous and actually nice.
I don’t like nice guys…and ‘nice guy’ is an oxymoron in itself.
Always the cynic.
Shut up.
He’s helping you out.
Only because he finds me attractive
You find him attractive.
Maybe a little, wait no, he’s an ass.
He’s nice.
Oh, fuck off
“Why the hell am I arguing with myself!” With that I sat up, then shook my head realizing I had yelled my words only to blush as I hear laughter coming from behind me.
“So, I’m helping a crazy girl.”
With a soft growl I stood up to face him…let’s just say, my salivation went into over drive. Before me stood Seb, in a black tank and a pair of torn up oil stained jeans. “Crazy, maybe a little, but in the good way,” I did not just say that, bad, no flirting.
This just caused him to raise an eyebrow and give me a small smirk, “So you said you were going to college, which one?” He made his way over to the truck and stared working, “Oh and I brought you a change of clothes. I may need help and I don’t think you want to get that pretty pastel uniform dirty.”
He chuckled as I glared at him, then looked at the clothes he had brought out only to walk over to it, “I’m going to Halberry, the liberal arts college about 2 hours from here; planning on majoring in American History Education.” I picked up a plaid shirt and a pair of shorts, “Nice shorts, a little short for you though.”
“They’re my older sister’s. I go to Halberry.” My mouth went dry as I went into the truck to get changed, “Really? What year are you in?” Why had my mouth gone dry? I got out of my uniform and into the clothes he had brought, hoping no one would jump into the back of the truck and see me changing out of my hideous uniform.
“This is my 3rd year. I love it up there, I’m majoring in Political Science with a minor in education. You don’t seem like the type who would be a teacher.”
I came out of the truck in the over sized plaid shirt that stopped about half way down my thighs and hid the shorts I had on, “What the hell does that mean?” Leaning against the truck I glared at him as he worked away.
“Nothing, just you have a temper and you don’t seem like a kid person.”
“Well, I guess I do have a bit of a temper, but I have no issue with kids above the age of 12, under that I really dislike…they smell and they are sticky.”
He looked up at me, and chuckled…again.
“Am I amusing you?”
“More so then you know.” My eyes widened, and I walked over to him to see what he was doing to the hell-mobile, “Maeve, hold this please.”
I did as I was told, but continued on with our conversation, surprising as it was, I found it easy to talk to him.
“How am I amusing?”
“Well for one thing, you have a temper, which to me is fun in itself. The fact that you just said you don’t like kids because they are sticky and smell is funny because look at the job you have. I could go on, but only after I’ve talked to you for a bit longer, which I plan on doing as long as I can.” Seb looked over at me, a sincere smile playing at his lips.
“Blah, just don’t jack up the hell-mobile because you want to talk to me, I’m sure the repairs needed would be docked from my pay.” Rolling my eyes, I gave him a smile to show that I was trying to be cute.
Why was I trying to be cute?
So, I was attracted to him.
So, he was easy to talk to.
So, he could bring out the more social side to my anti-social personality.
So, this isn’t one of those damn love stories, that I refuse to admit to reading.
He laughed at me, “You can let go now.”
I did, and without thinking touched my face with my hand, which caused Seb to laugh again and give a little eye roll all his own.
“You’ve got some oil on your cheek.”
With that he reached out a hand to rub it off, but his hands were worse then mine, so I ended up with only more gunk on my face. A sarcastic response was on the tip of my tongue, but his hand was resting softly on my face which caused me to forget about everything. My lips parted to speak, but all sound was lost as I looked up at him. His eyes locked with mine, then traveled down to my lips, back up to my eyes. I waited, waited for his next move. He bent down, only to lightly brush his lips with mine for a second…before pulling away.
“Sorry, that was out of line. You don’t even know me, and for all I know you could be tak…”
I rolled my eyes and pulled him down by the front of his shirt so that his lips met mine and that he would shut up. He was shocked for a moment, but only for a moment, and then he responded back.
Oh, did he respond back.
He pressed me up against the side of the truck, and one of my legs rose instinctively to wrap around his waist. His hands traveled down my body, and Seb proceeded to lift me up so that I wrapped my legs tightly around him; one hand gave me a rough squeeze as the other one found its way up to knot into my hair. I let out a soft giggle, and he took that moment to run his tongue over my bottom lip, asking for entrance, with a moan I let him in. We explored each others mouths. My hand remained fastened to the front of his shirt, the other on the back of his neck, my dark nails digging into his skin, as I used it to pull myself closer to him. Seb had a sharp intake of air as I pushed my chest up closer to him, which resulted with him pushing my up harder against the truck…both of us trying to get us as close as possible.
Nipping at his lower lip, I gave it a slow bite and tugged it slightly before letting go, he let out a deep sigh, and slowly opened his eyes Which seemed to have grown darker and slightly hazy.
“You stay true to your name,” he said in a hoarse whisper, before giving me a soft kiss.
“Oh, and why is that?” I pushed my head back, as he trailed soft kisses down my neck. Then made his way up, and his hot breath tickled my ear, “You are intoxicating.”
I smirked lightly, and brought him up so that our lips would meet again as he set me down on my own two feet.
“Why do I have a feeling that the truck won’t work for the rest of the day?”
He let out a small chuckle, “because it won’t.”
“Damn, well I guess you are stuck with me, for now at least.”
“What are you doing tonight?”
I brought my eyes up to his and gave him a genuine Maeve smile, “Nothing as of now…why?”
“Because, Maeve, as amazing as it is, I want to take you out tonight…on a date, and it won’t have anything to do with ice cream.”
“Oh really? And why would you want to take me out on a date.”
Seb gave me the smirk he had when we met, “Because you have intoxicated me.”
The End
A/N: Yay, second draft! So here's the deal, if you have read my other short story, "Forbbiden," you might know that I constantly tweek it. I will probably come back within a week to a month and fix it up even more.
Again pictures of Maeve and Seb are in my profile.
I may get working on another short story, until I can get over my writers block.
Right now however, I am fairly happy with where this story is at.
So yay! I'm so glad that I have gotten such warm response to this story.
Love ya all!
