Acrid Assassination
Chapter 1
Ajax
Another day, another morning. They always blended together anymore. He shook the blanket of sleep from his brain and wiped the last remnants of last night’s activities from his eyes. His sore body decided that the necessity to stretch was there. He arched his back and grabbed the headboard, his bare abs rippling. The waistband of his boxers itched.
The thoughts passing through his head that morning were the same as the others. None had answers, at least, none that made any sense.
He had no past, no memories beyond the accident. That explosion had taken his memories, his family, his life. He only remembered training to kill.
Sighing, he slapped the alarm clock and groaned. “Do I have to get up this morning?”
A buzz form his cell phone answered his question, shaking the night stand. He reached blindly, smacking table before finally hitting plastic. “Hello?”
“We need you.”
He groaned. “It’s Saturday. I have off.”
“Not anymore. We need your...special talents.”
“What happened now?” He sat up, finally awake.
“We have confirmation on the identity of the pentagon hacker.” The cool, female voice that he and the whole agency knew only as Mother answered calmly. “We want you to take care of him.”
“I’m honored.” he replied sarcastically. “Target?”
“A 17 year old named Lancer Micheals.”
“That weenie broke into top security files?”
“I take it you know him.”
“Unfortunately.”
“Well remember your training, Ax. You might need it.” He could never forget his training. In fact, it was the only thing he remembered.
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Target brief will be faxed to you shortly. Hit is required as soon as possible.”
“ASAP. Got it.”
“Ajax?” Her voice softened. “Wait until Friday. Tyr to get as much information out of him as you can.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Now go back to sleep.”
“No problem.”
“Over and out.” He hung up and crashed back onto he bed. His thoughts were moving endlessly, however, which prevented the possibility of sleep.
He sighed, reached for the lamp, and revealed the room to light.
“God. Another day, another hit. This is getting superfluous.” He told the wall crossly before going to get breakfast.
A bowl of fruit loops swirled in front of him, mimicking his thoughts. “Lancer Micheals. That waste of space? Break into government files? Why?”
The questions confounded him. Al he really needed to know anyway was that he had to kill his 17 year old classmate, a boy his own age. “God, my life sucks more and more as time goes on.”
“Without a doubt.” Ajax spun around, cursing himself for not hearing the intruder. What kind of assassin was he?
He hadn’t needed to worry, however. “Sun! You’ve got to stop scaring me like that!”
Sun, his best friend since forever, was standing in the window, having climbed up the fire escape per usual.
His blue-black hair was arranged in his usual style; meaning that it was in his eyes. Eyes that drew girls in like flies to a trap (or a hit to a trap. Take your pick) were now lit with mischief. Oh god. Ajax thought. What’s he up to now?
“Okay Sun, hit me with it. What’s going through your vast, mostly empty brain.”
He played with the cuffs of his shirt. “I resent that. It’s my vast, totally empty brain.”
“Oh shut up. We all know you’re a genius. Now spill.”
“Well, today’s Hyenta’s birthday, and her parents don’t give a shit, so...”
“Don’t tell me. Please not-”
“We’re going to throw a party at the Golden Phoenix.”
Ajax groaned. The Golden Phoenix is Sun’s family’s restaurant. While the name sounds like one for a Chinese restaurant, it’s actually a classy bed and breakfast. The main ballroom was about twice the size of Ajax’s CIA-bought studio apartment.
“Well, if we’re going to do this, let’s do it right. Hyenta will kill us if it’s not perfect.”
“That she would. So we’ll just make sure it’s great.”
So much for getting started on my plan for the hit...
