Staci looked up at the big university and sighed with excitement. She walked on to the side walk pulling her large suitcase behind her. She tucked a strand of her straight black hair behind her ear and looked down at the map in her hand. "You need help?" came a voice behind her. Staci turned around and looked up into the sparkling blue eyes of a very cute young man. "Yes, this is my first year here and I am looking for the girl's dorm," she said, already falling for this guy. "Oh," said the young man, "you were going in the opposite direction," he said and turned around offering his arm. "By the way, my name is Brad."
"Staci," she replied, shaking his hand.
Brad walked Staci to her dorm and talked about the campus along the way. "Wow, it must be really cool to be a sophomore," Staci said after Brad got finished talking about the different clubs.
"Oh no, I'm actually a freshman. My older brother went here and he told me all about this place," Brad replied, "here we are," he said as they approached a massive gray building. Staci's breath was taken away at the sight of the building. She turned back to Brad and said, "thank you for walking me."
Staci walked up the stone steps and stepped inside the building. It was an old brick building but on the inside it was nice and cozy inside. She went over to a desk by a set of stairs and rang the bell. A few minutes later a blond hair woman walked up. “How may I help you?” she said with a smile.
“I’m looking for my room,”
“What’s your name?” the woman said pulling out a clipboard.
“Staci Thompson”
The woman scanned down her list on her clipboard and then said, “Your room number is D95, which is on the fourth floor. Your roommate is Cassie Peterson. And here is your room key.”
“Thanks,” Staci said.
She walked over to the elevator on the opposite side of the lounge and pressed the 4th floor button. The elevator rattled and slowly began making its way up. The doors opened and Staci stepped out. She walked down the dimly lit hall and found room D95 at the end of the hall. There was already another girl in the room when Staci stepped inside. The other girl was wearing a green halter top and a mini jean skirt and her hair cascaded down in soft brown waves down her back. She turned when she heard Staci come in and looked her up and down with dark brown eyes. Staci sighed, knowing that she and this girl wouldn’t be getting along. Then the other girl smiled a bright, cheery smile and held out her hand, “My name is Cassie, you must be Staci. I think we are going to get along just fine!”
Staci shook Cassie’s hand with a bright smile and then started to unpack.
“Oh, let me help you with that,” Cassie said, “I already finished unpacking.”
They talked as they unpacked; Cassie was had been a cheerleader throughout high school and had already joined the team here at the university. Staci found herself liking Cassie more and more.
“Hey,” Cassie said after a while, “Me and two friends of mine are hanging this Saturday. Do you want to come?”
Staci thought about it for a moment. She liked Cassie a lot but wasn’t sure if she could get along with Cassie’s friends; but she didn’t want to disappoint Cassie, so she agreed to tag along.
When Saturday came Staci was in a frenzy; she wasn’t sure what to wear. “Here,” Cassie said handing Staci a light blue halter-top dress, “you’re about my size.”
The two girls walked out of the dorm at nine o’clock that night. Cassie was wearing a yellow top with a grey skirt. Staci was pleased to see her Converse shoes that she brought matched her dress perfectly and she had never been happier. And when she saw who was waiting for her and Cassie made her even happier.
“Brad!” Staci shouted and hurriedly rushed up to give him a hug.
“So you know each other?” Cassie asked with a smile.
“Yeah, he showed me around when I first got here,” Staci said and then noticed the second guy, “Hi, my name is Staci,” she said, holding out her hand.
“Jacob,” the young man replied shaking Staci’s hand.
“So, what did you guys have planned?” Cassie asked after she had given Jacob a hug.
Jacob shrugged and said, “We thinking about checking out that new bar in town. Does that sound okay to you girls?”
“Yeah,” Staci replied, “sounds great. Except, I don’t drink.”
“Come on, what do you mean you don’t drink?” Jacob asked, “Everyone here drinks!”
Brad put a hand on Jacob’s shoulder and said, “Hey man, don’t worry about it, Staci doesn’t have to drink if she doesn’t want to,”
While at the bar Staci couldn’t help but feel slightly uncomfortable, her friends were getting absolutely trashed and she knew there was no way they were going to be conscious much longer. But, miraculously, they were done and ready to go at twelve o’clock at night. Staci just wanted to go home but the rest of the gang had other ideas; they wanted to go vandalizing.
They walked for only a short distance and Staci was appalled to see that they were headed to a graveyard. The three friends pulled out white spray paint cans. Cassie handed one over to Staci, “No,” she said refusing to take the can, “I am not vandalizing graves.”
Brad walked over to her and put his arm around her, “come on Staci, where’s your sense of fun?” Staci could smell the alcohol on his breath and tried to back away.
“What are the dead people going to do? They’re dead; they can’t do anything to us! Watch,” Jacob said and then walked over to one of the graves and spray painted a smiley face on the top of the grave. He then turned around and handed the can back to Staci. Staci took it with a slight hesitation. Brad led her to another grave and then said, “It’s like Jacob said, what are they going to do?”
Staci took a deep breath and then sprayed the can all over the grave. She smiled and realized that it wasn’t so bad.
The next grave Staci came across read Margaret Sanchez, the date of birth was 1621 and the date of death was 1631; the girl had died at the age of ten.
Staci stood up and started to walk away when Cassie appeared by her side, “You’re just going to leave this grave?” Cassie asked.
“I just don’t think its right to vandalize a child’s grave,” Staci said
“Oh give me a break, this girl is dead, there is nothing she can do to you,” Cassie said and then began spraying the grave.
Suddenly an earthquake shook the ground and Cassie flew forward; slamming her head into the gravestone. The ground was instantly calm. Brad and Jacob came hurrying over and Jacob asked, “What just happened?”
Staci was in a state of shock and could only let out a few gasps. Brad dug around in his jacket pocket and pulled out his phone. Staci heard his voice over him but then the world became dark around her.
