Chapter One
Sabrina
The average rainfall in Britain has been recorded as 1,400 millimeters a year, treble that and you’d understand our annual rain fall in Kingsview, the only town in Britain where it never really stops raining, only to snow. So when I woke up this morning I wasn’t surprised to see it had been raining all through the night. What I was surprised about was the fact that it wasn’t raining now. Which was good as I couldn’t find my umbrella…Maddie probably has it…
I rubbed the sleep out my eyes and hunted around my, messy, room for my cucumber face wash. I found it wedged under my bed and I set to work getting ready for the hell that was Kingsview High School (Student population 865).Well it wasn’t that bad, the chavs stayed out your way as long as you didn’t piss them off too much. They were happy as long as they had enough fags, plus the necessary fag breaks. I shook my hair out my face and sprayed it with leave-in conditioner. I wasn’t bad looking, I had bad skin on the occasional day and sometimes my hair just wouldn’t flatten but apart from that I was ok looking. I looked around my room hoping to find my uniform. That was one of the worst things about our school. The shitty uniform. Maroon jumper, white shirt and either a black shirt or gray trousers. It’s horrible. Maroon makes me look so sallow. I glared at the offending outfit that was thrown over my desk chair. Vile thing.
I padded across the landing in my uniform and glanced into Georgette’s room, she had been gone for a few days on a school trip and wasn’t due back for a while. It was nice to have the house to myself (minus Mum of course) and not have an annoying chav eating all the Pop Tarts. I looked at my timetable that was placed on the fridge. English first period…someone up there liked me.
English meant one thing, Reece Dawson. We had met last year in English. I had seen him around the school but hadn’t really spoken to him. That was until he sat in front of me in English. English was my favorite subject mainly because I loved to read and my room was spilling with books. Everything from Jane Austin to Stephanie Myer can be found in my bookshelves. It’s the only thing in my room that’s organised.
Anyway…back to Reece. To be honest I couldn’t stand him to start off with. He was rude, big-head, obnoxious and conceited…well he still was but he was also really sweet and funny…and kinda hot. He used to take the piss out of me because of my book obsessions; I used to call him a whino, he’d hit back with a remark about my height (or lack of it), I’d reply with some sarcastic comment about his drinking. We bickered all the time and drove everyone mental with our flirting. I had been in crush mode since February.
Sadly he didn’t return these feeling, well not to me at least. His feelings were for his girlfriend Keira. They’d been together since March, I wanted to scratch her eyes out, well I would do if I had any nails.
New Years Resolution, STOP BITING NAILS …for the fourth year in a row.
Anyway…Keira. God she’s the worlds biggest bitch ever. She’s totally at the top of my “Wish they’d be hit by a bus” list. Still I was almost certainly on hers.
Nevertheless, I still saw him everyday at the bus stop. He would always hug me goodbye and hop on his bus while I walked home with either Nadine or Maddie. Normally on cloud nine. A nice place to be.
My name is Sabrina Ambers. I’m fifteen and madly in love with a guy who doesn’t really give a shit. I’m kinda pissed about it as well. So I got a hug, who cares (apart from me)? What I wanted was for his arms to wrap around me and embrace me. I wanted him all to myself. I wanted Reece.
I walked into the English class and took my seat next to Harriett. Harriett was one of my closest friends and kept me sane in English when Reece and his mates were driving me crazy. Which was nearly everyday…
“Heya” Harriett said grinning at me. She was filing down her ridiculously long nails. Lucky cow…
“Bonjour” I said opening my school bag (With Audrey Hepburn on it, she rocked) and got my English book out.
“Had a good evening?” Harriett asked.
“Yeah. No Georgette to hog the remote when I’m trying to watch BBC Three!” I snorted.
“Ahh must be nice not to have her home” Harriett said grinning.
“Fuck my head hurts!” A voice hissed walking past me. I sighed and looked up to see a very tired looking Reece. His blonde head drooping slightly. Someone had obviously been hitting the booze a wee bit too hard…
“Shouldn’t have drunk that seventh can then…” Aaron (Reece’s mate) said.
“Or the eighth…” James (Another mate) added.
“Or the ninth.” Aaron added laughing.
“Or the tenth.” James snorted.
“I get the point!” Reece said sitting down in front of me. “Anyone got any headache tablets?” He added looking around groggily.
“What do I look like? A walking first aid kit?” Aaron asked snorting.
“No…a first aid kit is more fucking helpful than you!” Reece snapped. I smiled, trying to decide weather to put him out his misery. Though he should really stop these Thursday evening booze fests. So it really serves him right that he has a headache. Still….he did look like a bear with a sore head….
“You’re in luck…” I said as Reece turned around. I got out my make-up/plasters and headache tablets bag that is vital if you’re as accident prone as I am( I can’t even walk across a room without knocking over something or someone.). Reece smiled widely at me. I tried not to melt right there and then.
“You’re a god!” Reece said.
“Oh I know” I said smiling.
“I doubt god is that short.” James said.
“Fuck off. I’m 5’3!” I snapped.
“What was that? 3’5? Wow that is short…” James said snorting.
“Nah…I’d say she was only 2ft” Reece said cracking his knuckles.
“You’ll get arthritis doing that y’know” I said leaning back.
“What?” Aaron said turning round.
“Never mind…” I said rolling my eyes and praying for the lesson to start.
There was only one bad thing about today…Physics. Last period and all.
Whoever invented Physics is a real gay. I don’t get it at all. Never have and never will. I mean what is the point? If you ever find out the point tell me cos I haven’t a clue.
I waited impatiently for the final bell of the day to ring so I could get the hell out of school. I didn’t want to go home; I wanted to hang out with my friends by the bus stop.
I tapped my pen against my desk glaring at the clock on the wall. Time seemed to go so much slower when you wanted to it to go faster. Physics has that effect. I blew a stray strand of hair out of my face. My hair was the most annoying thing about myself. It was big. Big and curly/wavy. Maddie calls it sex hair as it’s the kind of hair you get after having sex for hours then rushing out the house cos you’ve realised that your late for meeting mates/school/work. Everyone loved it. I hated it.
“Where you gonna be after school?” Nadine whispered smacking her gum right in my ear. The smell of Tuti Fruiti gum filled my nostrils, I hated that flavour. Chewing gum HAS to be Spearmint or nothing.
“Bus stop like always” I said simply. I glanced at the clock again only to see it said 3:28.
“Hoping to see a certain someone?” She giggled blowing a massive bubble that just missed my cheek.
“Grow up Nadine” I said laughing. But Nadine was right. I did want to see someone at the bus stop. That was Reece.
Suddenly the bell went and I ran quickly to find Maddie. I’ve known Maddie since we were five. We’ve been best friends since then as well. We’ve gone through years of Trick-or-Treating together, years of school plays, years of being best friends. At one point we were so close that we dressed identically for about three months, we looked jut like each other, we got out of that faze but sometimes we still share some…passions.
Maddie was slowly walking out of Biology, gazing dream-like at Reece, which was our “shared passion”; this was typical of Maddie though, as soon as one of our friends liked someone she’d end up liking them too. She flirted with everyone, single or in a relationship regardless. She had like him since September and had been desperately trying to get him to notice her. I waved at her to get her attention, I got none, I waved again. She waved back. I walked over and said hey. She blanked me until Reece had disappeared.
“How was Physics?” Maddie asked sighing.
“Same as always. Boring, time went too slow” I said pouting. Maddie tuted and riffled through her bag looking for a cigarette. She had taken up the disgusting habit over the summer. I try to get her to quit but to no avail. She thinks it makes her look cool; I think it makes her look like a walking ashtray. Makes her smell like one as well.
We walked chatting until we found ourselves at the bus stop. Harriett, Saskia and Cassie were there waiting for us. Maddie got a cigarette out and attempted to light it
“TGIF!” Cassie laughed seeing us. I love Cassie, she’s so funny without trying, this is mainly to do with the fact that she’s really ditzy. I always think that, to her great annoyance, she’s like Paris Hilton and Carmel from Hollyoaks all in one. Yet not as annoying…or rich...
“Whatever! I have dance class tonight! So boring!” Maddie said flicking her hair, still trying to light her cigarette, trying to get Reece to notice her. He was too busy talking to his mates to care. If she wasn’t careful her hair would go up in flames. Serve her right though. Wait, must not wish death on best mate. Another resolution.
“Well I’m happy it’s Friday! I’m ice-skating tomorrow with Darcie and Katie!” I said happily. Darcie was a friend from school. She had left two years before and I rarely got to see her. She had been one of my closest friends but when a year 11 beat her up for no reason she left, I hated the fact that she had left for weeks and weeks, if I hadn’t have had Maddie I would have got up and left and joined Darcie.
“Are you sure we can trust you with ice-skates” A voice said laughing. Maddie put on her flirty sultry face and stopped trying to light her cigarette, I just turned and smiled.
“As long as the rink has only me, Darcy and Katie on it!” I said smiling. Reece shook his gorgeous head smiling.
“I feel sorry for the rink,” He said grinning at me.
“You know I can ice-skate brilliantly!” Maddie butted in grinning. “I’m like Torvel and Dean but one and not a guy….”
“Right…... I’m like Madam Klutz here” Reece said pointing his thumb at me. “Shouldn’t be allowed on ice, or anywhere were it’s possible to fall over…trip…slip etc” I pushed him slightly.
“Ha! Lol!” Maddie said smiling a toothy grin. I tried not to laugh. I couldn’t stand anyone that said lol outside a MSN conversation.
Harriett caught my eye. She grinned, I smirked. She battered her eyelashes in imitation of Maddie, I snorted with laughter while my phone went off. One New Message. Alex. Alex was my cousin who had just moved to London and I missed the big jerk like crazy. I personally think that my mother drove him crazy; he lived with us while his parents went through the world’s messiest divorce. They made the Mills-McCartney case look like an episode of The Walton’s.
Hey Bri! Just got stuck on London Eye. Was ok tho. Fit girl was sitting next to me. Held my hand thru the whole thing wink wink Alex xxx.
I laughed and showed Harriett. My friends missed Alex maybe even more than I did. Probably cos they were allowed to flirt with him. Not that I find my cousin fit or anything. I’m not like Maddie at all in that department. Not that Maddie’s into incest…
“And who might you be laughing about?” Reece asked jokingly.
“No-one!” I said quickly.
“You sure?” Reece asked laughing. I nodded. “Well…” Reece said then he grabbed my phone out my hand and ran off.
“Oh! You are so dead!” I screamed laughing my head off. Everyone turned around to watch us. Maddie looked huffy, Saskia, Harriett and Cassie were laughing. Reece’s mates were nudging each other as if to say “There they go again. Flirting away while he has a girlfriend” I finally caught Reece by grabbing his bag and swinging him around. Our faces were inches away from each other…
“Reece! Bus!” One of his mates called out. Reece winked at me and gestured for me to go first
“Ladies first” He said.
“Then why aren’t you going?” I asked.
“Oooh!” Reece said running after me. We stopped at the bus stop. He hugged me and hopped on the bus. He smiled and waved at us. I waved back. He winked. Then his smile and his wink disappeared. Keira was sitting on the back row glaring at him and me. He glanced at me and Maddie through the window then grudgingly sat down next to Keira. Her face was red with fury. She turned and glared at me. I had been warned.
“Come on. I have to get home” Maddie snapped turning and storming of. Not even bothering to say goodbye to Harriett and the others.
“Okay…” I said. I waved goodbye to Harriett, Saskia and Cassie and raced after Maddie. She seemed to be in a bad mood. “Mads…You ok?”
“Oh I’m fine!” she said sarcastically throwing her hands up in the air.
“What’s up?”
“What’s up?!” She yelled. “How about you flirting with Reece!” here we go again. Whenever Reece spoke to me/hugged me/ or in this case chased me or got chased by me Maddie would have a fit about it.
“Mads get over it. I wasn’t flirting! You were but I wasn’t!”
“No you cow. You were flirting! Oh Reece don’t steal my phone. I’m now going to chase you and nearly kiss you in front of Keira!” Maddie said derisively imitating me.
“Mads if it means that much to you then have him” I snapped. “You can flirt all you want and get nasty texts off Keira!”
“Don’t worry I will!” She snapped back. I rolled my eyes and walked ahead of her. I hated it when Maddie was like this. She would get so possessive of things that didn’t even belong to her; including boys. “Don’t run off!” she yelled as I carried on walking ahead of her. She ran after me and grabbed me by the arm. I brushed her off and tried to walk on but she grabbed my arm again.
“Mads you want to flirt, FLIRT! But don’t get me involved anymore!” I yelled looking left and getting ready to cross the road. “Just remember, I’ve liked him since February ok, I think I’m allowed to flirt slightly!” I yelled. It was getting too much for me. Reece was coming between me and Maddie like no-one else had before.
“Like I care what you think!” Maddie shouted at me. There was no point trying to talk to her when she was in this mood. I looked left again and stepped out. “See if I care when he dumps Keira and goes after me not you!” Maddie shouted. I turned to yell something to her.
I heard myself yell.
I heard the bus.
A scream.
My scream.
Then darkness...
