The woman greeted them in her usual manner, acting almost as if she didn't expect them to show up at all.
"Yes, well I had to be careful not to raise suspicion." Dimitri stated.
"Ha! You're paranoid. Nobody would care much of what you do, boy." The woman glanced at Julie. "So, this is the human."
"Of course." His faced momentarily twisted into that of anguish.
She switched to telepathic dialogue, as not to worry the girl. "The blood moon's in 3 days. Any could tell your demon side's growing stronger, Dimitri."
"Yes, I know. I'm not sure how I'll protect her as it draws nearer." He smiled toward the girl.
"Julie, this is Griet-Moa-Sa. She works often with humans, I trust her well enough."
"Uhm.. Okay." She nodded her head toward Griet, in the way humans often do in acknowlegment of another. Julie wondered why exactly she was brought here. What would this demon woman do that could help her? She still was wary of Dimitri, another demon being brought into this made it feel worse for her.
Griet got up and pulled a small leather bag from her robes. "This should be of some use to you." Handing the bag to Julie, she turned back toward Dimitri. "Have you told her yet?"
The human looked from one demon to the other. "Told me what?"
Dimitri sighed. "You can't go back home."
"What? And why the fuck can't I?" She nearly screamed the words.
"It's been four months here. The human and demon realms are different in length of time. Your home has already gone through four years. What do you expect to find if you go back? People will have already presumed you dead, you've already missed who-knows-what. You don't know what exactly you'd be going back to."
Julie gawked at him. “But...”
“You’re not going back there. You’ve nothing that you can tell them as a reason you’ve been gone for so long. Besides, it’d put you in too much danger to go back. You’re safer here with me!” He put his hand to her cheek. “I can’t risk them hunting you down, killing you, doing God knows what to you.”
Tears began to form in her eyes. “Then, never. I can never go home, I must always be here. A prisoner?”
Dimitri gave Griet a helpless look. The woman shrugged and returned to her chair. She didn’t intend on getting in the middle of this momentary issue. He sighed. “Julie, don’t think of it that way. I can give you things that you’d likely never have in your mortal life. It’ll be risky at first, and it’ll take time, but you can be happy here. You won’t have to be as a prisoner.”
“Whatever.” Julie sat down on the floor. He’d given her hope that she could leave this place, then taken it away in an instant. There was nothing he could do to make it better. She doubted if he even had any idea what he was going to do, if he truly intended on helping her. Of course, she had to admit that he had a point. If she was to go home, nobody would believe her if she told the truth. Demons didn’t seem the type to just let a human run away, either. Her future, whatever may be of it, lay in this demon’s hands. She could only hope that he wasn’t decieving her, at least.
“Griet, I need to ask of you another favor.” Dimitri now kneeled next to Julie, wondering how he could comfort the girl. “I need to know. Could you take her in, take care of her, if worst comes to worst during the blood moon?”
She gave a soft laugh. “You should know me better than that, princeling. She’ll have to protect herself if you can’t control yourself.”
“Fine! So be it then.” He stood up. “Julie, it’s time to go.”
Taking her hand, Dimitri shimmered the girl back to his room. “Check the bag’s contents. There should be a silver-violet dust in there. That will allow you some magick to protect yourself if need be. It’s infinite, all you do is take a pinch out and blow it onto whoever’s trying to harm you.”
He began pacing his room. Griet won’t help them any more, they’d be on their own from now on. He needed to warn Julie of his pending unstability, but he feared he may frighten her away. Perhaps, however, he may be able to find a way to keep himself from harming her. In any case, she can use the magick against him if need be. It’s not powerful enough to cause real damage to even a halfling such as himself, but it’ll paralyze any demon for a few minutes.
Julie watched him, unsure as to whether she should say anything or simply leave him be. It was obvious that something worried him. His sudden anger toward Griet was probably connected toward this, she thought.
“Umm... So, what now?” She asked quietly.
“Just, stay here. I’ll make some arrangements tomorrow so that we can hopefully have a little more freedom from the others. That’ll be useful to us both.” Dimitri spoke hurriedly. “You’ll be sleeping in here from now on. Keep the pendant on you and the magicks within easy reach. For now, I think we both could use some rest.”
At that, he picked her up and layed her on the bed, laying beside her for sleep.
