The Day I had to Baby-sit

The day was chilly and sunny. I was in the third-grade and there was no school that day. My Dad said I was going with my 25 year-old sister to baby-sit. There were three kids, Darran, Sarah, and Cody. Darran was my age only a couple months older. Sarah was 6 years old and Cody was 4 years.

It wasn't the first time I helped my sister baby-sit. I was almost 10 so you couldn't say I wasn't old enough.

On the way to Sally's house my sister said that Darran was really looking forward to my coming to visit. "Autumn, Sally keeps telling me that the only thing Darran talked about over the last month is you." Charity was smiling when she said this. I turned my head so she couldn't see me blushing. You see even though I wasn't expressing it, I was looking forward to my visit, too!

We arrived at Sally's house around noon and when we walked through the door we heard Sarah scream. And Cody laughing for Sarah had tripped, trying to reach us. But the only one I didn't see was Darran! We went into the kitchen and Sally was on the phone. "Oh good, you're already here!" he said, relieved. "Charity the kids have been fed and bathed. But Cody needs a nap and Sarah has a cold. All Darran needs is to see Autumn. So you can go up to his room." She added to me and I went upstairs.

When I got to his room I stood in the doorway and I saw the back of him. I cleared my thoart and he turned his head. We looked at each other for a really long time, not exactly sure how long. Then, when we stopped looking at each other, we ran up to each other and hugged. It was awesome seeing him again.

After a while we started talking about different and random things. It was around 6:15pm when we ran out of things to say so we went downstairs. It wasn't even dark yet and my sister and the other kids were asleep on the couch.

About five minutes later Darran had an idea. We went outside and walked down to the beach. Darran wanted to show me the sunset. When the sunset came out it was beautiful! When it got dark Darran was very, uh... what is the word I am looking for... oh yeah, romantic! He said "It is little moments like this that make life so big."

But we were there too long. We reached the house and walked in. My sister was asleep but Cody wasn't and cried when we went by him. Then Charity woke up! She stood up. "Where are you coming in from?" She asked. "No where. We were just on the porch." I said carefully. We saw her shift her weight slightly. Then she said we would get away from it this time.

Up in Darran's room I was really cold and the heater was broken, so Darran gave me a blanket and I fell asleep next to him. Around 9:30pm I woke up. Then I saw I had my head on Darran's shoulder and he had his arm around my waist! For about 15 minutes I stayed still, then I heard someone coming up the stairs. I stood up so quickly that Darran fell over. Then my sister came in, saing Sally wouldn't be back until morning. So we would have to stay the night. Around 11pm I fell asleep again, but this time in Darran's lap. Charity woke me up saying that she won't tell my parents and said I could stay right there and so I did!

At 9:45am we ate breakfast and started to say our good byes. I asked Charity if Darran and I could go down to the beach one last time. She thought about it and said I had five minutes.

At the beach Darran and I walked and talked. Before we went back to the house Darran said he had a surprise for me. When I got it we headed back to the house. And Sally was there.

We all gave hugs and good byes. Then Charity and I went home and I started looking for a pen. I wanted to write to my journal and say how I got my first kiss at 10 years old! It was awesome! And quite a surprise.
