Something Stupid

“I’m on my way. Just wait for a while more ok?”

“Sure,” I said as I hung up and sighed. This wasn’t the first time she was late for a date. Or at least I thought it was a date. We never really did make things official. But one thing’s for sure: I love her.

I stirred my mocha in front of me and looked at my watch. It was already 8.45 pm and our movie is supposed to start at 9.15 pm. She had promised to be here at 7 so that we could have dinner but like always, something came up.

I shook my head and took a sip of my half empty drink. I can’t help but think that our love was like the bitter sweet taste of coffee. While it hurts so much to love her, it also gave me much happiness in return.

Beep beep

I took out my cell phone and looked at the SMS that was sent to me. It was from her.

Sorry I’m late. I’ll make it up to you okay? Love you!’

I smiled. Closing the message, a picture of us was on the background of my phone. I sighed again and looked at my watch. 8.50 pm.

As I looked around the shopping mall, I saw many couples walk pass. They all seemed so happy and loving with each other. I can’t even remember the last time I kissed her. Her work has gotten so hectic recently that I could barely talk to her on the phone, let alone see her.

And then there were the rumors of her being with someone else. Even if they were true, I wouldn’t blame her. She’s gorgeous while I am just lucky to have her by my side. How we ended up together was really just a fluke to me.

We were friends in college doing the same course. I had noticed her from the start. How could I not? There was just something about her that got me attracted right away. But being the way I am, I was much too chicken to actually approach her. That is until a friend introduced me to her.

As much as I was attracted to her from the start, she was also very much attached to someone else. It’s been 5 years since we’ve known each other and she always belonged to someone else most of that time.

Somehow, someway, we had gotten close. It was obvious I had a thing for her and sometimes it really did seem that she was just using me as a replacement or a toy to play with while she found a new guy. But somehow, someway, I always found myself catching her whenever she falls.

Every single time when she has her heart broken, she comes running to me. Like I said, somehow, I was always there. I guess that was when she started to feel something for me too. I can’t remember the last time we kissed, but I sure as hell remember the first.

She had just spent the night over at my place as she needed me to send her to work the next day. Nothing happened that night. I swear!

But the next day, when I reached her work place, she playfully asked for a goodbye kiss. This wasn’t the first time she did this. Every single time, she’d ask for one and puckered up her lips. And I’d move in (playfully) and she’d avoid me and we would have a laugh.

But this time, she didn’t.

And our lips met. For like 2 seconds and I was stunned. She laughed and got out of the car. I was still trying to figure out what had happened.

I laughed as I remembered the first kiss. It was rather accidental and kinda comical. I looked at my watch and it was already 9.10pm. My mocha was now cold.

“Sorry I’m late.”

I looked up and saw her. She was as beautiful as always.

“Come on, the show starts in 5 minutes. Let’s go,” I said, getting up from my chair. She habitually linked her arm with mine and we walked towards the cinema.

During the show, she rested her head on my shoulder. I can honestly say that I could not wish for anything else. Just being this close with her, without any disturbance is just pure bliss.

But as always, her phone started to vibrate and her head left my shoulder. I sighed as she read her message and started typing a reply. Not even 10 seconds later, another message came and I glanced at it accidentally.

Babe, I’m going to bed now. Goodnight. Love you, muacks!’

My heart sank.

I stared blankly at the screen. Not noticing anything but the growing pain in my heart.

After the movie, she was talking while we were walking out of the cinema.

“Thanks for waiting for me. I know we hadn’t had much time together recently,” she said with an apologetic smile.

“It’s okay,” I replied.

“You’re the best you know that? That’s why I love you.”

Then I remembered the message she had gotten in the cinema and felt the urge to ask her about it.

“Are you seeing someone else?”

“What?”

“I saw the message…”

She just kept quiet and looked at her feet. I could feel tears welling up in my eyes. I sighed and shook my head.

“You know, if you say you love me, please mean it…”

She looked up, still not saying a word. I took her hand and kissed it. I looked into her eyes and continued, “… because I might do something stupid, like believe it.”
