Chapter 1 My Best Friend

I'm like most girls my age. I have family, school, pet peeves, and a best friend named Naida. She loves the ocean, is like royalty, and...oh yeah! She has a tail. Welcome to my life. Can you keep the secret?

"Mom, can I go play in the water?" I asked.

"Yes Nissa, just be back before dinner!" Said Mom.

"Okay Mom!" I yelled as I peeled off my shorts and shirt to reveal my light blue one piece bathing suit. I pulled my shoulder length auburn hair into a ponytaill, slipped on my flip flops, and ran outside.

When I reached the water I kicked off my shoes and ran into the warm water. Most would say it's freezing, but Daddy says I've been in it so much the water's part of my soul. I was just swimming around, enjoying the sun and water until I heard something splash. I looked around, very scared. Then something slimy brushed againts my foot. I yelped, slipped on a slippery rock, and fell under the water.

I was struggling for air when I saw something. It was the thing that splashed and brushed my foot. A mermaid. She had long blonde hair and bright blue eyes. Her skin was pale and she wore a white cloth around her upper body as a shirt. The mermaid's tail was a sea greenish blue. When she noticed I was drowning she pulled me up to the surface and smiled at me.

I stared at her.

'How can this be real? It has a dream.' I decided. Suddenly the mermaid started shreiking things very loudly. The noise was like someone dragging long sharp fingernails down a chalkboard. I clamped my hands over my ears.

"Stop screaming!" I yelled, apprehensive and freaked out. She stopped and blushed.

"Sorry." She said. I gaped and stared again.

"You can talk?" I finally asked. She looked offended.

"Well, mouths aren't only for eating you know." She said.

"Sorry, it's just...I've never talked to a mermaid before." I stuttered quietly, annoyed. "But, aren't you supposed to...like...not exist?"

"We do exist, we're just secretive." She snapped.

"Sorry." I apologized again.

'Man, she gets offended easily.' I thought.

"I've never met a real human before." She said curiously and started swimming in circles around me.

"Well I can't say I've met a mermaid either." I replied sourly. The mermaid stopped swimming and smiled.

"My name is Naida. What's yours?" She asked. I shook her hand.

"Anisa, but everyone calls me Nissa or Ani." I replied. She wrinkled her nose.

"I'll call you Anisa." She said.

"Eh, fine with me." I shrugged...

I woke up from my dream and stretched, reaching over with my hand to shut off my alarm clock.

"Nissa, time for school." my mother called from downstairs. I groend and pulled the pillow over my head.

At least Naida didn't have to go to school.
